Why does a 56k modem download at only 5k/sec
If any of u could clear of the doubt
that what does the "56k" stand for.
I alwyas thought 56k refers to 56k /sec download when actual downloads are relatively less.

Connection speeds are measured in "bits," and download speeds are measured in "bytes." Don't ask me why, it's just the way it is! hehehe.
One byte = 8 bits.
So take your 56K and divide it by 8, and that's your top download speed.
GO here: http://www.computingcentral.com/topi...eedtest500.asp
test your bandwidth, it'll give you a read on connection speed, and top download speed for you connection at that given moment. Right now, mine reads:
Your line speed:
1069.5 Kbps
131.1 K bytes/sec
Awwwww yeah!

yes, and also 56k usually only connects at 50k, or 52k, almost never 56k...

Actually because of the FCC, it is technically impossible for any modem to connect over analog phone lines in the US faster than 53Kbps.
Thanks, Uncle Sam!
