windows98 network

I'm trying to set up a win98 network for file/printer sharing. I have an internet connection working for both at the same time, but everytime I log into my main computer it tells me that it has the same name as another computer on my network, and to change it through network properties. I'm sure that the two computers are named different, one is:
name: upstairs
group: WORKGROUP

second:
name: downstairs
group: WORKGROUP

If anyone has any idea why this is happening, I would really appreciate the help.

Are you IP addresses unique? That might be the problem. For example, the one upstairs should be 192.168.0.1 and the one downstairs should be 192.168.0.2

Try that. And make sure you change the IP address for the house network card and not the Internet Network card.

Verify that the names are indeed different by running either ipconfig /all or winipcfg.exe. I'm not quite sure about the names in Win98, but they should be similar. The problem you have was rampant in Win95 because there were 2 different places to set the computer identification. That may still be the case in Win98. Click on Control Panel, Network. There is an Identification tab, under it is a computer name and workgroup name. Under the Configuration tab, highlight your tcpip component and click on properties. Under the DNS tab is a Host and Domain. The host name in DNS must be unique. Make it the same name that is entered under the Identification tab. Host names must be unique within a given domain (or in your case a workgroup).

I think that is the problem. However, when I try to change the tcp/ip dns settings for one protocal, it changes the dns for them all. I have 3 tcp/ip settings.
So i change my host to "upstairs" and domain "WORKGROUP" ..
but it changes it for them all. How do I get it to change for only one?

I forgot to add that I get that error message even if the other computer on my network isn't on. Is it because It thinks that my two nic cards are named the same?

Windows only allows you to have one NetBios name and one workgroup/domain association, unlike TCP/IP. If you don't need TCP/IP between the two computers, remove the TCP/IP protocol from the internal network adapters. Check that both are configured to be in the same Workgroup, but have different Computer Names.

Make sure you don't change the TCP/IP settings on the external interface.
