Post issue with long filenames and web folders

    I got an issue here

does HTTP have a limitation on long folder names?

in Win98/2000 I'm creating web folders,
when I use a UNC folder name (\\server\folder)for the path I am able to see long fodler names within that folder.

when I use a HTTP:\\server\folder I am unable to view long folder names within that folder

long FILE names show up no problem, was wondering if this is a limitation of HTTP

It would depend on the web server's ability and its OS platform. I've only worked with Apache on Linux and Apache on Solaris had no filename troubles on either.

the web server is Netscape enterprise web server installed on a Netware 5.1

I'm thinking its a problem with the web server

I think not, becuase NES, or iPlanet, is ported to quite a little number of os's, not just Windows. I bet th reference platform is Solaris, and if an application has a problem with long filenames on that its not going to get very far. So for your problem I would be more inclined to suspect Windows...

Is this happening with all folders? There are some special characters that can mess things up. For example if your web server/browser dosn't handle them properly (or isn't configured properly) spaces can be a problem.

it happens with any folder within the web folder your connecting to via HTTP

folders with more then 8 characters dont show up in explorer or get abbreviated to "folder~1" in IE

when I connect to IIS it works fine, I can see long folder names without a hitch

The only time I've ever seen the "folder~1" format for a name is under DOS. I don't have much experience with Netware or Netscape's program, but it does seem strange that the problem you have described would happen.

Sorry I took so long to respond. I wasn't on line over the weekend. If I understand you correctly you can see the long file names correctly when you are connecting to a WinNT server running IIS but not when connecting to a NetWare server running Netscape enterprise web server.

This tells me that the problem is not your workstation, but on the server. I haven't worked with Novell for a few years, but I seem to remember some problems with long filenames. I know you had to specifically enable them in NetWare 4.x. This is probably not the problem here since it shows up properly with a UNC path.

My best guess would be that the Web server is unable to recognize the (Novell) long file name for some reason. I have no idea what could be causing it though. If you do find out post the solution here, I would be interested in seeing it.

I'm fairly certain its a problem with the Netscape web server

when I use a UNC folder name to the Netware or NT server I have no problem

as soon as I use the HTTP path to the folder using the Netscape web server I can no longer see the long named folders within that folder...

the patch for long folder names was applied to the Novell servers

    I'm stumped

    web server is Novell 5.x
    file server is Novell 4.11
