It's rice because of how people use it. When a person takes a greddy or HKS exhaust with an oversized muffler (aka FART CAN), and puts on his civic... making the civic rice. Now, it's rice. The companies are not rice, what people do with their products is rice. Then the now full blown ricer, goes "Yo, dawg, I got my HKS exhaust straight up from Japan... for an additional 50 horsepower". That's just AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. But, yeah, since this is not a car forum, I won't really go into that.

The movie comes into play as a catalyst of sorts, there were people who were modifying their civics before TFATF, however they were just mere modders like everyone else. After the movie the epidemic began. People realized that it's (supposedly) "cool", neon lights, Type-ARRR shift knobs, JDM mirrors, began filling up Kragen, Pep Boys, etc. That's how the movie comes into place. It basically made the current definition of "rice" just that.

You have the wrong image of rice. It does not depend on the car at all. There are some civics that can blow the doors off a viper easy (in fact i can dig a link about one later, it ran quarter mile in less than 9 seconds), but when all the person has is a giant exhaust, and cosmetic touches and thats it, then its rice. Most ACTUAL racers dont mess witht he apperance that much at all, the most they do is put on stickers of companies whos parts went into the vehicle just out of gratitude.

What makes it rice is that they are all big name tuners catering to the 17-27 demographic. They know that kids are going to buy their stuff and put them on their "fast" cars. The fact that they encourage this type of parts use is what gets me. It's also the consumers fault. They choose to take these companies products and do stupid things with them, they give a bad image to everyone else. This happened with NOS. Respectable company, appeared in TFATF, suddenly, every teenage kid wants "NOS" (a freakin company, not nitrous) on their car. I understand there are some serious cars that have 0 rice whatsoever, unfortunately, a large majority is just a bunch of wannabe kids who just want to look fast, which is why i criticized the choice of large tuners. Small tuners have yet to be hit by this ricer craze. Small companies such as Cobb, ScoobySport, Vishnu.

Nobody is saying that all civics are rice, my dad owns a civic. But most that want to look fast are. I saw the video of the civic beating the viper. Rest assured, that thing is not a civic. No way anyone can squeeze that much power out of the B16. Either a swap or a massive turbo. And let me tell you something. I could take my family's minivan, and beat a viper at the drag strip. let me tell you how. Driver skill. If the guy driving the viper cant hook up at the start, he just spins his rear wheels and goes nowhere. And if after 15.9 seconds, (yes, our van runs a 15.9 1/4)he cant get past the finish line, i've already won. Driver skill is 80% of drag racing, even more so in autocross and track events. And not all drivers of expensive cars our skilled. Example: My mom's old landlord got a new viper srt-10. I dont even know if the guy can drive a manual. He does not heed break in and instead does 120 on the freeway. something tells me he revved to high, because he blew his brand new 10 cylinder viper engine. Now he's getting new racing crap to put into it. Possibly to be ready for another engine blow.

    That's my rant.
