They also asked people to review the exhaust fan to an intake fan raising the hd temps from 3 - 5 degrees and defeating the purpose of the air filter on the front.
did you mean reverse? thats simple enough to just place the filter on the back.
but other than the firmware upgrade to 2100rpm, what would be a drawback of this unit? its only 119 more than the drobo and has TONS more features with it!

Yes sorry I meant reverse :P
Fingers got ahead of the brain Need to have my Quad Core implant soon....
But its a really nice unit, with X-RAID which is a nice properitary array, that allows exandability.
Like I said poke around the forum, its the best way to get a feel for a product. There is also a 1GB unit, but you can get the 256MB unit and just get a laptop SODIMM upgrade for it.
Also dont forget to follow the hardware compatability.. I have also heard it doesnt play nice with WD drives and some Seagate can cause annoying email notifications for false alarms...
You dont need to do the reverse on the ReadyNAS NV+ just the older NV units. The NV+ has the 2100rpm fan patch already. You cant just swap the dust grill to the back as it taken most posts I read over 15 degree high on the drive temp pushing 60c...

hmm neat. so. the choice is hot or dusty. seeing as the cases are sealed, the hdds that is. ill take dusty.
i was planning on the 256mb version and then getting the upgrade :P thats always the plan.
as far as the compatibility list, is that an issue? the drobo doesnt seem to have any incompatible hdds.
but yah right now the NV+ is first in the list, followed by the drobo and then a new box w/unRAID on it.

Just go by the hardware list of approved drives on the infrant website and you should be good.
Its basically Seagate, Hitachi and Samsung drives only they recommend and they include models.
Also the drives run in SATA I speeds, but its not like SATA II would be any different anyway
Just a FYI

well alright then it seems that the nv+ is the choice of choices. the only downfall seems to be that you cant mix and match drive sizes but honestly its not that big of a deal.
now...onto choosing a htpc. pre-built or barebones or completely custom... ah the choices

Did you pickup your Infrant Nas setup?
I will be installing my NAS tonight when I get back to NYC...
I had ordered the Infrant NAS with 256MB cache, ordered a 1GB SODIMM and four (4) 1TB drives...
Cant wait to play with it, but it will take a long long time to get through the RAID 5 or X-RAID process.

Just to clarify, I did originally ordered the 750GB drives but, the order did not complete and I was charged for it. The fraud protection canceled my order next day because I ordered it no where near where I and dropping it off to and my billing address :P
Go figured I ordered it in UK! So the order never completed and the funds were reversed in a 10 days (they suck).. I had reordered the items by using my remote desktop to my home network and got it ordered that way.
Damn vendors and their fraud protections :P This new NAS setup had already arrived today :P

Some personal feelings on the Infrant NV+
The web-based interface to configure the device SUCKS! It is slow as hell as if I am loading a website from china on a 56K...
The write speed is a bit on the weak side, but I need to move it on over to my gigabit switch to see if it really makes a difference...
The configuration could be better...
Still working on the security configuration and shares.. But with the interface blowing as bad as it does, its a slow process...
You can have user accounts with different privileges to some degree without a DC.. But very limited... Also if you opt for users with home directories, each users home is in the root \\server\username.. I would prefer if it was \\server\home\username
Its not as loud as I thought it was and what everyone was complaining about, its actually very quiet.
