So far for me it doesn't seem to have the heart that Dragon Quest 8 had. I am only about 6-7 hours into it though. I thought Dragon Quest 8 was one of the best RPGs I have ever played--and this is coming from someone who bought Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy for the NES when they came out.
I think the lack of personality and interaction with the party is what is hurting it for me (although I understand why they had to do it).
