NFS: Underground

well, this game looks pretty cool. Being able to tune real cars instead of the crazy ones that we fantasize about. However, there are a few things that turned me off after reading the PCGamer preview.

1. They can't spell "Subaru Impreza" it's impreza, not imprezza.
2. They're modeling it after TFATF(The Fast and the Furious) which automatically makes it rice and stupid. I can just imagine story mode: "You better double clutch and not granny shift or you'll fry your piston rings. OOPS! Too soon junior!"
3. There are only 20 cars
4. The tuning shops are all big name RICE shops, like HKS, NOS, GReddy, etc. We want more specialized tuners, like Scoobysport, STi, Proline, and Spoon.(You can tell i have a subaru bias)

That's nearly it, it better have a good physics model, we dont want another hot pursuit 2.

interest level: 4/10

EDIT: Momo will be included in the game, the italian company. That redeems it from rice a little. I also would like the tuning in the game to be realistic, not gran turismo like. I mean real life realistic. Like adding a Jackson Racing supercharger and intake still only allows you to put down around 150 fwhp with the d17y8 engine in the 1997 civic ex. I want complete tuning abilities, like being able to remap the ecu. I DON'T want one turbo to suddenly add 500 hp.

I don't like TFATF but I think they based it on that to gain a wider population of gamers. Of course, this turns off gamers like me so I guess we'll how it does... I personally wish they would go back to the old formula for NFS which was: Semi-arcade type racing, Fast cars, and unique and interesting tracks. Add a good physics engine and it's perfect . All imo of course...

Although I don't think that this will happen but it would be great to have a Gran Turismo on PC . Though I think this is gonna be like a pseudo- Gran Turismo which could be good or bad depending on how you view it.

only recently has street racing and rice gone hand in hand. Before, it was all good. then TFATF came along and suddenly, everyone had super cars that won them cash at events on deserted city streets. As for the physics engine, if it was anthing like porsche unleashed, then i am satisfied. i am very wary of the upgrade system.

NFS has always been about a more unrealistic arcade experience rather than a simulation, with the exception being Porsche Unleashed (arguably the best title in the series).

You should give the PS2 version a try, the physics model is MUCH better.
And if you're just basing it on the realism factor - it was an arcade racer!

I cant say that there has been a better NFS game since Porsche Unleashed. I'm hoping that this one will be better than HP2, I really was not impressed with that game at all. I guess we'll see... do they have it listed when the game is coming out yet?

That's very true. I hear the PS2 version is vastly superior to all of the others.

BTW: Does anyone know of any realistic Gran Turismo type games on PC? I am dying for such a game. If they ported gran turismo 3 or released GT4 on pc, i would die and go to heaven.

My sentiments exactly. I bought that game back when I had a 500MHz Compaq Presario and it blew me away.

From what I could make out from the features list it sounds like complete tuning is out of the question. It's gonna be win/buy this part and put it in, or that's what I believe it is.

Damn, when will we ever return to games like streetrod??? where you can actually chop a top, strip the bumpers off, tune the engine, replace major components with better ones!!

I'm too lazy to quote people all the time, so I'll just post my responses.

Yes, the rice factor in NFS: Underground will be of the new type. Meaning TFATF style. However, since A LOT of people (not me) are into this stuff... the game will most definately sell well. As a marketing move to make more money EA is doing good.

Another point is this:
racing games, for some reason, never really went too good on the PC. Sure there is Colin McRae series (even though each one has MAJOR flaws), and smaller great titles such as Rally Trophy (best rally game ever, IMO). There is also the HUGE NFS line... which only has ONE good game: Porsche Unleashed. IMO, the other ones suck. I've played them all. However, there is ony smaller game that is better than ANY racing for the PC, EVER! Live For Speed. Download it now, play it. Then buy it. There is also stuff like Generally but that's just for fun... not real simulation. Another reason for the lack of good racing games for the PC is the age factor. Most adults already own a real car, and don't really a driving/racing sim, while the people that own consoles are ususally younger people that don't yet own a car. I've owned about 5 consoles, now I'm 16, and I've sold them all (in the process of selling my PS2 to buy a barton/pc3200/slk800 - you know what will come later ) . They just stopped appealing to me. The PC has taken me over.

Admit it folks, you just feel more at home at a PC when your left hand is on the left side of the keyboard navigating around the WASD keys whilst your right hand is resting on the mouse. It just feels better that way.

I agree. It is merely advertising which is needed for the company to get sales. HKS leaves me in disbelief every time they release a modified Lancer...
