I have a PIII-600mhz cpu and was thinking of getting a new video card, cpu and motherboard..I have it pretty much down to the Leadtek 32mb geforce2($160) and the Ati Radeon 64mb($170). Both have good reviews...Which card do u recommend for major 3d games like UT,Giants and the new ones coming out and heavy 2d games like RA2 and Ground Control. I have a Voodoo 3 in my comp. right now and it seems ok but want a faster card. What would u recommend for the long run or should i wait. Also if i get a new card would i notice a big difference between my 600mhz and a thunderbird 1gz.I was thinking of getting a new cpu but also dont know what to get.The motherboard i will probably get is a Asus via kt133.I have 128mb of pc100 ram already and everything else. What about cooling?I have about $500-600 to spend...Should i wait to get this stuff or buy now ..please give me your input.

well instead of spending alot on the thunderbird 1ghz. i would say got get a 650 duron and overclock it to 1ghz. i've have read many post of people doing this with theirs so u might want to give it a try. and as for video card. i would say get a 64mb geforce2 it would be alot better in the long run.

On the video card front the Radeon is an excellent choice. With the 64megs of DDR it'll be ready for newer games. On a cpu a T-bird is good with good cooling. I'd go with the KT7A Raid board even if you don't use the raid function you'll have a good oveclocking board.

Well how abou this.
Get yourself a nice i815ep motherboard like the Asus CUSL2-C. Get the Radeon 64MB DDR, it rocks (make sure it's the retail version, because it's clocked at 183MHz, the OEM is clocked at 166MHz). Overclock that 600MHz to 800MHz by raising the FSB to 133MHz!!! Make sure you have good cooling! Get the Alpha PEP66 version 2 w/Delta 38cfm fan! That's what I would do, your processor is fast enough, and overclocking is fun!! Is your PIII 600MHz a Coppermine or Katmai? ------------------ AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1.0GHz@1.23GHz (112X11 @ 1.85v) Global Win FOP38-1 (with Artic Silver II) Abit KT7 Corsair 128MB CAS2 PC133@150 SDRAM IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP ATI TV Wonder NEC MultiSync FE950 Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! FSB - Front Side Bus!!
FSB X MULTIPLIER = CPU SPEED Your PIII 600 is running at a FSB of 100MHz (100 x 6 = 600). ------------------ AMD Athlon "Thunderbird" 1.0GHz@1.23GHz (112X11 @ 1.85v) Global Win FOP38-1 (with Artic Silver II) Abit KT7 Corsair 128MB CAS2 PC133@150 SDRAM IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30GB 3dfx Voodoo5 5500 AGP ATI TV Wonder NEC MultiSync FE950 Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! I would get the Radeon 64, and your mobo and processor depends on wether you want amd or intel.
Intel-Abit SA6R or Asus CULS2-C OC your current processor. AMD-Abit KT7a Athlon 800@1000 or Duron 600@1000 With OCing though, you cant guarentee that you will hit these speeds. ------------------ Knight of the OC Crusaders |

i dont think you really need to spend anything on a processor right now. that's usually the last thing to upgrade if you have a decent system. the first thing usually is the vid card. i would recomend the radeon64 ddr over the geforce, but i would also wait a little while... i just read an article about how ati is releasing their card a little after the geforce3(which is really soon)
if you wait a little, you can grab the new radeon2 for probably around $300 or get a super cheap radeon since the price will no doubt drop. ------------------ "Good, bad... I'm the one with the gun."-Ash |
