Gaming in Other Countries

I was just thinking about gaming and gamers in other countries. I just remembered while playing the SvM Beta that "Germans" were described as these hardcore schutze-spies haha, and recently we had a thread that basically described (the local, American) gaming public as little kids whose balls need to drop before they get on voicecomm--more about this in a minute.

So i'm wondering, how is gaming viewed in other countries.
I know in Japan its pretty low key honestly (yeah, hah, I know right?) even though Japan is the source for a lot of innovative gaming stuff. I mean, it's big, but its not like there are movie trailers for games in Japan. People are more likely to go have some tebasaki and smoke some mild sevens in some Roppongi bar while checking out the ladies (Hot ladies by the way).

In Malaysia, a country i've had the misfortune of staying it, "Gamers" can be construedto be ganglike, since a lot of youth gangs there have nothing to do with their time, and cybercafes are abundant.

The U.S. of course has its own unique gaming culture full of prepubescents who watch their pubes grow in between rounds of Counter-Strike.

--What is so sad for me is i'm 19 but I don't exactly have Hal Douglas's voice or anything

Sorry, I don't have an answer to your question but I thought that comment was hilarious and just wanted to let you know.

I think you getcarter are taking the assumption that gamers are kids, that is probably true for console gamers heh, jk.

IN PC gaming the fastest growing segment is grey gamers, retired people. They like WWII games. Plus adults are more likely to afford the equipment. PC gaming can be expensive.

Here in canada, I think gaming is viewed as immature to a degree. I dont go around bragging too much about being an avid gamer, thats for sure.

Speaking about Canada, you've got some hot chicks. If you realize, a lot of soaps and shows in the US have a lot of canadian chicks.

But yeah, haha. Back on topic.

In Singapore the gaming scene is rather lousy. Yeah, if you stay in a hotel you might get writeups about the gaming scene here. But to tell the truth Gaming here is strictly unprofessional and mainly pirated. Most of us kids have no time for games and mainly just mug. Or the rest ruin their lives in creative ways. Especially since most of Asian society frowns upon gaming. Singapore taste is strictly absurd. Many of us still cling to CS 1.6. Because of this strange taste, hype works to great effect and many games don't launch well here. For example, Unreal tournament is almost dead here. The community is extinct, almost gone, except for a few online local servers.

However, its nice to know there is a retreat for people like us. Sim Lim Square, AKA the Hardware mall. Word of advice, don't buy anything from there. Its much more expensive than in the States. But thats where you really see gamers. Not little kids who shout kill at the next covenant that pops into view. Its nice to know that almost every guy in the mall is serious about his technology and you feel very at home. None of them have the expertise that sharks do. I pretty much surprise everyone there due to my age.

However, if you speak in terms of consoles. We are pretty good, though most operate on a library of pirates.

I imagine that Korean gamers really say "kekeke," "yuo giev...," and "you buy gold for you wow char" in real life.

Other than that, I can't imagine. Crazy foreigners with your goofy moon languages. I'm American so I know what the norm is, I don't rightfully care about anyone else!

Thats cool. I'm Japanese, i've lived in several different countries. I thrive of making fun of people who pretend to care about the rest of the world.
