Gunstar Heroes... How the hell can I pick stuff up?

OK, this is seriously pissing me off... I'm playing Gunstar Heroes on Gens with my awesome new x360 controller, and it rocks.
However, I cannot figure out how to pick up powerups. Walking over them doesn't help. Pressing down doesn't help. Pressing any other button while standing right on top of them doesn't help. What the heck?

I think it happens automatically? Anyway, no button I press on the GBA version works either.

i havent played that game in awhile but if i remember correctly you either press DOWN or DOWN+B while standing on the powerup

yeah, its down or some variation of down and another button.

I played it a few weeks ao on my gametap trial.
