I am having major install probs with KT7A-Raid

Help!!! I just got a new KT7A-Raid and have been dragged to hell and back by it. Here is my setup

Win98SE
900mhz TB with unlocked L1 bridges but no OCing yet.
KT7A-RAID
128MB CL2 Crucial mem.
20gig Maxtor 7200/UMDA66 HD (Tried it first on IDE 3 as master, the first raid plug on the mobo. Now it is running off of IDE 1 as master.)
Tobisha DVD on IDE 2 (master)
NEC Floppy
NDC 10/100 Ethernet card
*ATI Radeon 32mb DDR
*Diamond MX300
*=problem inducing (I think...)

Alright, here is what's up. When I install the Ati drivers (I have tried using the ones off to the cd {v100} and the ones off of the 'net v4.13.7072 for sure and maybe the v4.12.3056 one {I have it too but cannot remember whether or not I have installed it in the multiple installs I have done}) I find that occasionally when I get to the flying windows part of the startup I am treated to a screen that tells me that it is now safe to shut down my computer. I found the following on via's site:

A: There are four important steps to follow:
1) Go into BIOS setup and enable USB
2) Install Win98 on your system
3) Download and install the VIA IrQ routing miniport driver from our driver page
4) Download and install the VIA AGP driver from our driver page (for MVP3 & VP3 chipsets only)

Do I have a MVP3 or VP3 chipset; should I do step #4? Should I for-go the 4-in-1 drivers altogether (I have v425a installed)?

At http://www.apushardware.com/faqs/kt7faq/kt7faq.htm, Pauls Unofficial KT7 FAQ it mentions a fix for an unstable Radeon card:

My ATI Radeon DDR graphics card is unstable. How can I fix it?
You have to use the 3054 or 3056 driver set with this board. There is also a sequence you need to follow in loading the board drivers and VIA's AGP driver. This driver needs to come from the 4.23 or 4.24 driver set. If you use WindowsMe you do not have to worry about DirectX installation either. Go to www.rage3d.com and review the forums for further help.

For the KT7 use the following sequence, if you load WindowsMe skip the DirectX step.

Fully remove the previous ATI driver set using uninstall.
Choose PCI Adapter and reboot.
Load DirectX 7.0a.- reboot
Load latest VIA AGP driver - reboot
Load ATI driver set 3054 or 3056 for Win98/Me - reboot
Reload latest VIA AGP driver from 4.24 set - reboot
Load DirectX 7.0a- reboot
Depending upon the system setup, steps 5 and 6 may not be needed.

You may need to set the AGP driving strength to 68.

Do you think that I can use ATI drive 3056, substitute VIA AGP driver 4.24 for version 4.25a, and substitute DirectX 7.0a for version 8 and still get the same results?
Does it matter that I am using the Standard Display Adapter (VGA) instead of the mentioned "PCI Adapter"?

I know this is long, thank you for getting this far in the post. Right now I am running without the MX300 and using the Standard Display Adapter (VGA) with DX8 and everything is stable. I never went into BIOS setup and enabled USB (part 1 of Via FAQ above) before installing, could this be part of my problems? What should I do?

Has anyone gotten a MX300 to run on their KT7A board? Mine crashes whenever it tries to run/install the SoundBlaster emulation?

I installed the Aureal drivers 2048 for Win9x instead of the Diamond MX300 ones.
I need to "comment OUT the Lines By SST in au30mmed.inf." I can find the lines but what is "SST"?

if you install the soundblaster emulation? than you got conflic with ANY I/O driver. try to disable soundblaster 16 emulation. it my work

Ok, here's the deal. I had the exact same problem that the MX300 has, only with my SBLive Platinum 5.1. What's going on is that the SB16 Emulator is emulating and old ISA card that can't share IRQ's. This emulator conflicts with the HPT370 controller on the KT7A-RAID. Disabling the SB16 Emulator in the Device Manager WILL NOT WORK (at least it never worked on my PC) Windows kept on freezing right after the windows loadup screen. My system is finally stable, but this is how I have it set up: Disable both COM ports in the device manager AND in the BIOS under (I think) Advanced Chipset Features. This should free up enough IRq's for you. I also have the SB16 Emulator disabled in device manager. If you are using your COM ports then you can force the SB16 Emulator to use a different IRQ than the HPT370 controller, but you need to still find a free IRQ because it won't share it with any other device even if you enable LPT sharing. The manual explains how to force a PCI device to use a particular IRQ. You do this in the BIOS. Hope this helps! ONce you get that fixed the KT7A-RAID is awsome! I have 2-45GB Deskstars in RAID-0 and so far they are FAST and reliable. Good Luck!

Oh yeah, and you don't really need the SB16 Emulator anyway. All it does is allow you to have sound on old DOS games, so unless you play these I'd forget trying to get it to work. It's a useless feature to me.

Thanks for the info. I did some searching and found Paul's Unofficial KT7 FAQ site. He said more or less the same thing that you did. Following what I found on that site, I installed the generic Aureal 2048 drivers. With them installed and RAID disabled--which I am ok with for the moment as I only have two EIDE drives--I can run with out crashing. His site also outlined how to get the Radeon to work and work it does, I just finished playing 2 hours worth of Oni .
