Post MSN Instant Messenger service outage and its implications for .Net

http://www.zdnet.com/zdnn/stories/ne...kpt=zdhpnews01

MSN Instant messenger has now been down for a full 7 days. For the first 4 Microsoft did not even make it known that there was a problem. I am curious to see how this has effected you and what you think the implications are for .Net and confidence in Microsoft Microsoft as an Application Service provider in general.

In March, Microsoft unveiled HailStorm, one of the cornerstones of the company's .Net software-as-a-service strategy. Through HailStorm, Microsoft hopes to deliver e-commerce services, address books online, and password management to disparate devices such as PCs, handhelds or cell phones.

Microsoft is integrating HailStorm into many new products such as Windows XP, the Xbox game console, and Stinger cell phone.

HailStorm, in part, relies on instant messaging.

Interesting article, but why did you post this in Programming/Scripting?

Normally I probably would have put it in OT, but with the .NET tie in it fits here as well as anyplace else. (.net is after all a significant issue for developers/programmers)

I could also have gone in OS, but I felt that putting it there would have been just flame material for the MS/Linux battle.

And if there's one thing we don't need, it's more of those

It's pretty worrying really. The article says it all, it puts the whole viability of .NET under the spotlight. It's all well and good to say "we'll use the web as a platform", but this isn't the Starship Enterprise. Stuff does break, networks are unreliable and l33t d00ds are trying to own you.

In the long term, it might work, but there is a saying warning against putting all of your eggs in one basket.

Mordrin, is MSN IM still down?

This does not bode well at all of MS. AOL, ICQ, and Yahoo! seem to all have been able to keep their IM's up with minimal disruption, one would think that the same would go with MS, especially considering the importance of said service to their future looking plans...

(Mental note, read more about .NET....)
