Win2k bsod error. Please help.

Well, here's the problem I have. When I first installed it, counter strike was working fine under Win2k. Then one day it caused a bsod, right at the point where I was just about to enter a level. The error message was something like "irql not less than or equal.....some other things(can't remember)......beginning memory dump" and it just hung there. This error would not occur every time at first, but after a while, it would happen every time I tried to start a game. I reinstalled half life and cs, and got the same error. I reinstalled win2k, then halflife and cs, and still got the same error. Does anyone know what this is, or al least have a fix for it. I've had to go back to WinMe now, but I really want to be able to have Win2k on here.

Specs are:
P3 600e
ASUS P2b
128mb ram
Hercules Geforce DDR, det 3 6.32
SB Live Value, SBlivewaare 3.0 drivers
Diamond SupraExpress 56i vcc
Logitech Optical Mouseman Wheel
Windows 2000 with SP1
Half Life, ver 1.1.0.1
Counter Strike 7.1

Any help would be really appreciated.

Err, not sure what TSFO is, so unfortunately, probably not the same guy. Sorry to dissapoint ya. But please, if you know anything about this error could you help me.

I sounds like you have a conflict. I know it sux to have to debug, but if I were you, I would disable the sound card, the modem, and any drivers you have in the background, and see if the error occurs. If it doesn't, add more hardware until you get the error, and you've narrowed down the source. If you still have the error, than it may be a bad driver, or corrupt memory or system files. You can look for new drivers, or try different memory sticks, and see if that helps. You can also scan you HDD for errors to see if that's the problem. Good luck.

Thanks for the info - it looks like i've got a bit of fiddling around to do. How can I disable devices in win2k without having to physically remove it? Is it just a case of going into device manager and selecting "disable device" as in win9x?

The puzzling thing with it, is that, to begin with, it worked fine, but I can't remember what I did between the game working, then it acting up. Do you think it could be something to do with service pack 1? I didn't install sp1 straight away the first time I installed win2k, but I did the second time before I tried CS again. Also, is there any way I can check for bad ram without removing the sticks? I have 2 x 64mb sticks.

It was a Quake 1 Mega TF clan. We used revolutionary tactics and old mainstay tacs to take world champion status in three leagues. TSFO also sponsored the largest one on one tournament I can remember. I have never seen so much talent in one "place" before or since.

First, visit http://support.microsoft.com and search for "IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". I found about 6 documents, and they might help you to get on the right track.

In the old days, NT4 would usually name the device driver that caused the problem, but Win2k seems a bit more tightlipped (atleast using a default Win2k configuration I think -- I haven't seen a BSOD for a while now).

If I were you, I'd give the NVidia 5.3.2 drivers a try, because there might still be some issues with the latest 6.x.x drivers that need to be ironed out.

Hey thanks, BikeDude. I tried the knowledge base before but I couldn't get any results that seemed to relate to this problem (I must have been typing the error code in wrong). I don't really understand what the articles meant, but one mentioned something about this error occurs because a driver is trying to do something it shouldn't, so this could possibly be something to do with the nVidia drivers. It also mentioned it could be caused because of mismatched ram, and I have 2 64mb sticks which aren't totally identical (one is cas2 the other is cas3 i think) so this could also be causing it.

I'll have to test some of these things out. Once again, thanks for the help.
