Problems with Western DC 40 g

Pri Slave HDD Errors bios says

Bios says that it detects both primary master and primary slave, then when its time for boot up I get a message saying Pri Slave HDD Errors press F1 to Resume, I then press F1 and windows starts and my primary slave HD doesnt show up benath the primary master HD in explorer?(named utforskaren in swedish, dont know if i got it right in english?). I cant find it in windows xp. Also when i go into bios, WDC400BB stands on primary slave but when i check on settings it has the right cylinder number and so forth but on size it says about 8.4Gb. I have msi 865PE Neo2-fis2r with the latest ami bios v1.3.

Is my WD400BB broke? If not how do i get it to work properly?


My WD400BB worked with my old computer but my graphics card broke and i never tested my old comp with a new card instead i bought my current comp and expected my WD400BB to work. Maybe my WD400BB broke at the same time as my graphics card...?

You've probably already checked, but are you sure the master/slave jumpers are set correctly on both the Primary Master & Primary Slave? You could also try installing the drive on its own controller temporarily, just to see if the motherboard detects is correctly.

I started testing my new comp with only my WDC 40g as primary master, with correct jumper setting. leaved my second and much smaller HD in the cupboard. ....Error

My smaller hd works flawlessly, im using it now as primary master.

then after a few days my disk space was almost full, save from maybe 300Mb, then i started trying to get the WDC400BB to work. as i mentioned that didnt go well.I am now connecting the 40g on the same cable as my primary master, in the middle connector obviously. with jumpers tested on cable select(or whats it called?) and slave.

I think my WDC400BB has seen brighter days

got an answer from western digital they said either newer bios or an IDE controller card, i got the latest bios, just checked that and a controller card is almost as expensive as a new hd....#¤%#%"#¤

I think the person you spoke to at Western Digital thinks you've got an old motherboard. A few years back, there was a BIOS limitation that could get you stuck at 8.4 GB. But that applies to old Pentium & Pentium II boards, and I'm guessing your motherboard's a lot newer than that!

It would be nice to be able to install your drive on a different board, just for testing purposes.

And if it is some strange BIOS conflict or something, a PCI IDE controller shouldn't cost you anywhere near what the drive costs! You can often find PCI controller cards for around $20 from online sellers like newegg.com.
