Just got a new laptop... problem
Hey
I just got a new toshiba laptop, and once I turned it on, it already had that "nt authority system blaster worm" problem, so I downloaded the security update from the microsoft website. Im not sure if the patch is cuasing this but, every time I turn the laptop on, it slows down the internet for the rest of the computers on the network, including that one. As soon as I turn it off, everything goes back to normal
Does anyone know what the problem could be?
This has also happend to me in the past on one of the desktop computers, and it was solved be reformatting the hd, but i'd like to try to figure out what the problem is.. I just got this laptop too.

If you were connected to the Internet and not behind a firewall or router, the laptop probably got infected almost immediately after you turned it on.

The patch you installed doesn't clean the infection -- it merely prevents the computer from catching it. If the computer was already infected when you installed the patch, it's still infected unless you've done something else to clean the virus. And if it's infected by Blaster or something similar, it's going to be spewing lots of packets in an attempt to infect other computers, and that traffic on your network could very well be the cause of your slowness.
To clean viruses related to Blaster, you can use McAfee's Stinger utility, which is a free download. Just download it and run the executable -- no installation necessary.
