Unlocking AMD cores
That was simple. Set ACC to auto and reboot. I ended up with the 720 from my previous post for 80USD. I have a couple questions. If the 4th core is bad what should I expect to see. What's a good program to test stability.
My board has a built in memory stress test but nothing for the CPU. What can I expect for max overclock without increasing the voltage?

Learux is right. Use prime95, and do the CPU torture test. If any of the cores says 'fail' at any point in the test, you have a bad core. You can run the test as many cycles as you like, but I'd be satisfied after 5 or 6 cycles that all your cores are fine at that clock rate if none of them fail. This test runs your CPU's cores at 100% for the whole time, so you'll also find out if your cooling is adequate if you're overclocking, too.

I have been running day to day tasks with no problem so far. I have done both video and audio encoding which I assume are very CPU intensive tasks. I have not overclocked yet. Cooling is not a problem since it is winter and my house is f"ing freezing.

I unlocked the PhII 550BE on the kid's machine. No problems yet, except for temp monitors failing to get a read off the cpu. Pretty nice little $100 quad.
Mine: Core i7-920 + Xigmatek S1283 // Gigabyte UD4P // gigabyte windforce hd6870 // 3x2GB Corsair DDR3-1333 // Antec 900 V2 // Corsair TX750 // WD 640GB Cav. blue // Samsung TOC T240 24"
kids: PhII 550 BE (quad unlocked) + freezer pro 64 // Gigabyte UD2H // 2x2GB Corsair DDR3-1600 // CM Centurion 5 // gtx260-216 // Corsair HX620 // WD 640GB Cav. black // some 22" monitor

I picked up the 720 for 80. Quad for 80!. If anyone is in Va there is someone selling a 920 for 80 also.

Yeah, I also have that issue (not being able to monitor temps) with my 550BE, but for money we paid, that's a very small drawback to get an unlocked quad core Phenom II that overclocks to 3.5+GHz speeds. In the games I play, there's very little difference between the i5 and my Phenom II anyhow, so I think I got quite a bargain.

turns out I ended up with stability problems. Something is funky in the system anyway (dimm2 slot is bad I think, in addition to who knows what else). Oh well, so close yet so fail.

My 720 has been running 4 cores at stock 2.8ghz with no problems. I have been doing some video and audio encoding with it. I might try overclocking it soon.
