Question PS2 as a dvd player?

are there any significant disadvantages to using a ps2 as a dvd player? is the interface cumbersome? what about the video/audio quality? i dont have a lot of cash to burn so im looking for a cost effective solution

also, can anyone give recommendations for a good ps2 remote? thanks

This article excerpt is from Sharky Extreme:

I suspect that higher end equipment may well reveal audio and video shortcoming for the PS2's DVD playback that my system could not. But what owner of a $6,000 home theater owner is going to rely on a PS2 for his DVDs anyway? For the market at which it is aimed, the DVD capabilities of the PS2 are marvelous, obviously good enough for most living rooms, and an absolute bargain. I know more than a few friends who are discovering DVDs because of their PS2s and only now finding the extra goodies, background material, better video and better sound this format has to offer. I am sure all of them will get a standalone player eventually. As I have said before in my overview of the basic unit, just about any DVD player has a sturdier disk tray and more functionality, not to mention true remote control.

The author sums up that the product suits the need for the selected audience, despite the tiny setbacks the PS2 appears to have.

I will tell you this about my opinion. I'm one of those who finds it to be a product of excess, but that's just because I love the hybrid effect the PC gives the user. Not a consol fan, but the article does express the seeming total similarities between the different platforms for DVD.

the ps2 dvd player is ok, but if you plan on watching a lot of dvds i'd get a stand alone player or computer hardware decoder. i've had trouble playing some discs and sometimes it skips on discs that play fine in other players. so it really depends on how much you plan on using it and how serious you are into movie watching.

I wouldn't see any flaws in it. I've got a PS2 as well and no problems yet (Albiet I had really only played The Matrix and that's really it ). It's got Optical Out, and every connection for video. But if you want TRUE DVD, a dedicated DVD player is what you'd need.

As for DVD remotes, I don't really know any. IGN might have a few recommendations.

The PS2 will not play VCDs. Tried it, but it wouldn't work. My Sony DVD player which is older than a PS2 has no problems with VCDs.

I just got the Sony brand PS2 DVD remote, it has a lot more functions, and includes a disc to update your dvd player software on the PS2. The only thing is that the software needs about 2.2 megs free on a memory card.
