I've got some beef with the back button!

Is it me or does everyone hate that little option that web developers use for the back button? Take sharkyforums.com for instance, just try to back out of their site! You cant. I personally hate this. I think there is a reason for the back button and it should not be blocked. Do the web developers actually think that the user is going to stay at their site longer? No! The user is just going to be annoyed and close the browser down, just like I do.

Are you talking about the back button on the browser or the web page?

I usually right click on the back button and jump back around 7-8 pages at the same time, so I don't have any problems with it.

Guess I completely overlooked that option. It still steams me that programmers can do this to browsers. Not only can they control the back button, but they can open other windows when you close your current browser. Is there any other reason why these options are available, other than to annoy the user?

Well, they don't quite control the back button. It's more of the way that they program the pages. One page can (like in this forum) forward your browser to another page. Like when you type in the www.SharkyForums.com in the browser, it takes you to one page that runs a script to generate what you were wanting to see. Well, if you hit back, you'll get back to that page with the script and it'll regenerate the page that you just backed away from.

It's really not the programmers trying to keep you on their website. It's more that the code of the browser and the websites are working perfectly, it's just not doing what you want them to do. Kinda like the old phrase: "Computers aren't stupid, they do only what they are told." What you told the computer to do isn't quite what you wanted, so they did what they were told instead.

It's a limitation on how things were programmed. Remember, in today's world, TTM (Time To Market) is one of the single most important thing. The webpage designs out there have been programmed with TTM, ease of adding material, and robustness in mind.

Seems like one big conspiracy to me! I see what your saying. Is sharkyforums doing this page redirection because of the database information that is being displayed? I don't really see the need for page redirection on the opening page, unless sharky has some mirrored servers.

From what I understand, their CGI scripts poll their database for this forum, then polls the cookies in your browser, and then displays the results.

I'm almost certain that Shark has several mirrored servers.

Like I said, it's all in the design of their scripts. The way that the scripts work now allows for near real-time updating for the SharkyForums. I honestly don't think that there is any other way.
