Well let's see, i have a dreamcast.. which i'm very happy with (and i believe it will beat the PS2 blindfolded), however im currently wondering wether to get a PS2, or wait a year (more or less) for the Gamecube. I'm not too sure about the X-Box, it seems interesting, but i think ill just wait and see how it fairs when it ships.Quote:

Well i definately think that the PC is still the best gaming platform out there, for those who have the MONEY for it! Because sure you can do tons of other things than games on a PC, but now you can go on the net with your dreamcast, so other than Applications (and a few other things) there's nothing stopping a console from being the same thing as a PC, except costing ~1800$ less (varies of course).
Of course PCs are built on a total variety of choice and upgradability, but consoles are getting more upgradable too, slowly, but surely.
I think the only way to know is just to keep one's eyes open in the next few years (which is hard to avoid, unless your dead)

Yep, I too think that the PC is the best gaming platform out there. Heres a few reasons:
Console games played on televisions. Televisions are nothing compared to a monitor. So you see, neo, the console will never be as good as you (PC) can be. https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/08/2.gif
Keyboard / Mouse is the ultimate combination for fps games, which is probebly the most popular flavor of game right now. I cant wait until people with the new internet consoles start playin games with thier PC brethren....then they will see the power of the mouse, hehe. https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif
Can't complain. I have had a PS2 (from Japan) for nine months now, a DC for ages and a Nintendo 64. It's fun sometimes on the big telly... but I have to say there are some games a console just can do yet. Namely UT and Quake3

Speaking of which, I hope you do reviews on QIII and UT for Dreamcast. I want to know if the consoles do these games justice. If the Dreamcast conversion is up to your standards, I will definately have to get these games!Quote:

I have a Dreamcast and a Playstation, but I still prefer PC gaming. I find the consoles really good for when the kiddo wnats to play a game with Mom, or for when I wanna sprawl on the couch or in bed and do some playing (kind of hard to do that with the PC) https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif.
As of late, my favorite DC game is Sword of the Berserk, and Fear Effect (psx). Any suggestions for good DC or PSX games? I'm also wondering if you know of any controllers made for either console that are better suited for a child with very small hands... he has a real hard time holding the DC controller especially.

SegaGT (best racing game, ever!)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica (not for kids, but very scary and very good!)
Soul Calibur (best fighting game, ever!)
Guantlet Legends (great for multiplayer!)
Crazy Taxi (you will love this no matter who you are!)
NBA2k (best Basketball game, ever!)
Sonic Adventure (great for kids, with lots of replay value!)
All these games are great. Sega did very well to get these on their system.
i would have to disagree with people here
the console is made for games, a computer can play games but wasnt built for games in the first place. console were born and designed for one specific task, games and that was all.
yes the pc is the most popular, u could say, but look how many crappy pc games are there. most of the people u speak to will mention maybe 10, maybe not even that many good games on a pc right now, the most pop is UT and Quake. Quake 3 is believed to be on the ps2, there are game on a pc u cant get for a console, and there are games on a console u cant get for a pc
my simple answer is have both, a pc and a console, the console is your personal choice.
wither it is a microcrap (hehe) console, or the ones that have been in the business for years.
the ps2 will be the overall winner in the console department, with ease, sega make the best arcade games, but not that good in console area
Arcadian,
Truth be told I love games (like duh!) so I tend to own everything I can. It's not only important for me to keep a fresh eye on things but it's bloody fun too. I've have loadsa PCs which nothing can replace in my book for UT and Quake 3. I have two Dreamcasts (one Japanese one which I have had since September 1998) which I use for NFL 2K1 (amazing!), Ecco and Sega GT. Then a Playstation 2 since late March, which I use for Fifa 2000, Dead or Alive 2, Fantavision and soon GT 2000. Then there's an N64 collecting dust and a Gameboy, which I can't find. Basically there are some really unique games on every platform. But obviously the PC is my favorite. I'll obviously have to own an X-Box and Dolphin (I mean Cube) as well as it's my job but I'm sure I'll enjoy 'em all in some way. The weak link for me right now (only because they've never done one before is the X-Box).
And to anyone that says "PC Gaming is on its way downhill" I challenge to go to E3 or something https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/6.gif

Oh we will. I promise you that https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif Can't not do 'em... The biggest problem I have with 3Dfps on consoles is those pesky controllers. Like where is my mouse dammit?
I have to say I've got the N64 version of Quake 2 and for people that can't afford PCs etc.. it's really quite amazing what they can do with so little in the hardware department. That's what I like about the console gaming development community. They have a tight spec to work to, where as the PC developers either get lazy and don't optimize code for people with lesser machines or they just get their heads lost in the clouds because they are using $5000 systems that nobody owns.

So you don't have a SNES? what a shame! If i we're you i'd go buy one right now, you could probably get one for 10 or 15$, maybe 20$, and games these days you can find em for 5$ each easily enough (excluding chrono trigger which still sells used for just about how much it costed new)Quote:

And about the N64, i'll have to agree.. i've actually enjoyed alot of games on it, but primarly the games i enjoyed the most we're those that were massively multiplayer (by massive i mean of course 2-4 players) i.e. Goldeneye and Mario Party (the first, not the second). The first is of course a classic that everyone should own, but even though people might think that the second is childish or whatever, it's actually damn fun and can get very funny when your 3-4 people (alone is fun too but i do not recommend it)
As for the dreamcast, well what can i say.. i definately think that it's the best console out there (and will be for a good long while) because of a number of factors i won't get into at this point in time https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder.
My personal opinion is that console gaming is pretty much going to surprass computer gaming for a few logical reasons:
1. Mostly obviously is cost.
2. There is simply more money to be made selling games for consoles, heck, even Microsoft is jumping in with one. It may not necessarily be EASIER to program games for PS2 and GameCube, but will be a lot more straightforward. With computers, programmers have to account for countless computer set-ups.
3. The only real advantage computers had over consoles is internet play, and thats changing very soon.
The PC is far from being the PERFECT gaming platform, because there will never be a such thing! Consoles and computers both have their good and bad points, but it's nonsense to say something like:
"Or is the PC still the perfect gaming platform?
Total rubbish. I'm the world's biggest fan of PS2, but I know its not going to be a "perfect" platform. More powerful than the rest (including computers), yes.
"Well let's see, i have a dreamcast.. which i'm very happy with (and i believe it will beat the PS2 blindfolded"
I respect this statement as an opinion, but how do you think Sony put Sega under the first time? By delivering a great product and thinking ahead by years, not thinking back by them.
As an example, Saturn was designed to be the ultimate 2D machine, and when Sega saw the (then) mind-blowing 3D graphics of PlayStation, they hastily tried to increase 3D capabilities.
Sega has definitely done much better this time around, but was at a large disadvantage (technologically speaking) coming out first.
But, and I don't want to sound like free advertisement for Sony, but PS2 is going to be more than a gaming console. I leave it to you to explain how DC can beat PS2 "blindfolded".
------------------
"What do you need?"
"Guns. Lots of guns."
Well, I love console gaming. You never have to worry if the damn game is going to work from one time to the next, never have to worry about incompatibility or anything else. You put the disk in, and it works. Period. For me, this reason alone makes consoles top of the heap.
I love the Dreamcast and consider it the best gaming platform out there for most genres. It's just a damn shame it has virtually zilch in the way of decent RPG's. I got Capcom vs SNK and Spawn imports today, and like most of the high profile DC games, they're both fantastic.
One reason I like the DC so much more than Sony is that at least Sega tries to make the DC library full of variety. With totally off beat stuff like Space Channel 5, Seaman, Jet Grind Radio, Ecco, Powerstone 1 and 2, and other things, there's a lot of non-traditional, truly great stuff that you can only get on this one platform.
Just the same, when it comes to FPS, playing online, rts, and RPG's, PC's are where it's at. I'll take Planescape to Final Fantasy any day of the week. I haven't tried NFL2K1 yet (it's sitting here still...), and I'm dying to see how the hell they got a sports game to play online, but I can't imagine spending a horde of time with my DC connected to the net either.
Still though, it's a cool step in the right direction. It's somewhat ironic that UT for the PSX2 is split-screen only, while the DC version will have netplay. Thus far, and especially after their abysmal showing at E3, I'm none too impressed with the PS2. Although Koei's stuff looks good.
I skipped the last generation of consoles (PlayStation didn't appeal and the Saturn was too expensive, although I recently bought a Saturn cheap and love it - NiGHTS is amazing!) but I have recently got back into console gaming. I love my Dreamcast - it's so well designed (the controller holds a VMU which has an LCD screen - genius!), there are so many great games for it (many from Sega, yet again putting their numerous talented software development groups to good use) and I can pommel my Dad at NFL Blitz 2000. ;) Can't wait for NFL2K1 either, and Space Channel 5, Samba De Amigo, SNK vs. Capcom, Sonic Adventure 2, Shen Mu and Jet Set Radio (I refuse to call it the ridiculous name they're calling it outside of Europe and Japan) are all looking like must have titles once they hit English shores.
The PlayStation 2 hasn't impressed me as much. Same controller (including silly D-pad and loose analog sticks with a stupidly tiny range of movement), ugly black box, bad DVD playback quality, few good games. Munch's Oddysey and Silent Scope are the only two games I currently care about, and they're coming out on PC and Dreamcast respectively. It's also 300 pounds in the UK, which is nuts. It kinda sucks that it will sell at that price just because people know the Playstation name and blindly think it'll automatically be good and worth such a silly amount of green, whereas the Saturn bombed when it sold for the same price. I'm sure I'll get one eventually, I'm a gamer so how could I not, but the current lineup isn't impressive enough for me to care right now, so I'll save my pennies for future quality DC games. With Epic, Raven, Legend and human Head doing games for it there are bound to be good games for it some time, just not any time soon. Besides, I'm trying to save for a flat right now, dammit. ;)
X-Box? Sounding powerful, nicer to develop for (good thing - more games, sooner) half a billion being spent on launching it. A number of good games confirmed for it, many developers apparently working on games for it. Should do well. Gamecube? Hmm. It's a dull looking box, pretty powerful but no PS killer, but Nintendo will do their usual trick of releasing one or two "killer" games a year for it, those killer games being ones I don't overly care for (as with Mario, Pokemon, Donkey Kong 64 and Perfect Dark).
Hmph, rant over. I'm sure I've made enemies with half the console owners in here now, but that's life. ;)

Actually, I don't believe the PC is the perfect gaming platform. I was just trying to get the topic rolling. I actually agree with you 100%. Consoles make much better gaming machines, with the small exception of not yet having keyboard and mouse type gameplay available (which I think might change). The thing with computers, though, is that (in the near future, at least) there will be far more PCs in the world than gaming consoles. It's far too easy (and cheap) for a developer to create a PC game, so I think (for the near future, at least) PC gaming will continue strong.Quote:

In terms of consoles, I have been extremely pleased with the high quality games on the Playstation. Sony continues to sport AAA titles on their console, and I have reason to believe they will continue to do so with the Playstation 2. With the hardware of the PS2, and assuming Sony continues to have the support of key developers (Square, Namco, Capcom, Konami, etc.), I can easily see it remaining the dominant console in the market. I do have a Dreamcast, though, and I have seen some very impressive games coming out for the Dreamcast. Also, Sega has their online up and running way ahead of the competition. This may give them a huge advantage in the upcoming months (especially since the PS2 price is 2x the Dreamcast and the availability will be small). I think in the long run, though, you may be right about the PS2 being the leader once again. We'll have to see what happens with X-Box and Nintendo, because they have impressive specs as well. But, since I have no loyalty to gaming platforms, I will easily switch to another one if it is much better at the time. In the end, it's all about the games.
