gurus wanted.......

I am such a loser, i have been lost in school and gaming that i have done something wrong.. my mark2k score is 1381 and here are my specs:
athlon700w/ gigabyte ga7ixe
wd hd@7200
192 pc100 ram
geforce ddr(anihilator pro)
sbl value
3com nic card
4x2x24 memorex cdrw
what is going on?
on top of that in my sys properties/performance, it says: "drive c is using ms dos compadibility mode file system"

and on boot up it says i dont have any "nvram"
man im hating life ...do i start over and format the hd? change cmos? help plz

Try reinstalling your hard disk drivers. It's going to take several tries, probably because windows is screwy with hard disk controllers, but just install the default bus mastering drivers or the default dual IDE controllers. Keep removing the one that is there and installing the right one until it sticks.

For your low 3dmarks score, try installing the latest via 4-in-1 drivers.

Do you have any "nvram"? Mosts pc's don't (at least I don't think so), it is a special kind of ram I think sun uses alot. Something about it not losing memory when power goes away. I think nv stands for non-volitile, though I could be wrong.

I would call the mobo manufacturer.

They might be able to point you in the
right direction about the "nvram"
problem.

All the motherboards I've used have NVRAM.

The easiest way to get rid of msdos comp. mode on your hard drives is to re-install windows.

NO! The easiest way to get rid of the msdos mode compatability is to reinstall the hard disk controller. My BIOS starts up and says searching for NVRAM, no NVRAM found. My entire system works flawlessly. I don't think that's your problem.

I've been using NT since '93, so my Win9x knowledge is a bit flakey.

But if memory serves me right the message above indicates that Win9x thunks down to 16-bit real mode code to access your drives. Translated this means that it'll be slower than watching paint dry.

It could be a lot of things, but I'd poke around in config.sys and see if there are any suspicious device drivers loaded there. Making sure you have the appropriate disk controller driver installed for Win9x is ofcourse crucial as well...

Perhaps some old viruses forces ms-dos compatibility mode? (I think there are a couple of them that'll do that)

Etc...etc... In the end you might be better off rounding up a healthy collection of the newest drivers and reinstall Win98SE from scratch and remember to install the drivers over again. (and ofcourse remember to install any specific drivers for your particular chipset)

Even better: Install Windows 2000. Either it won't install (which 9 out of 10 indicates hw failure) or it'll install and everything is peachy. Unlike Win9x there isn't anything in between working or not working. Which is actually nice. (many times something will appear to work under Win9x and you'll just experience random crashes which are naturally hard to pinpoint!)

The hdd controlers reinstall should fix the ms dos comp. issue,but i suggest a full win reinstall.win 2k also is good,but is kinda underperformer in games compared to win 98.
The score in 3dmark is very low for ur config.Check wich 4in1 drivers are installed and also gef drivers.

Agreed. Try just re-installing the drivers. Although in my expierence such an act sometimes forces me to re-install windows. This is a good case for being diligent in making back ups of your stuff you use a lot.
And buckup the registry. Although thats a pain in the *** too usually; I've noticed that it doesn't do a lot of good becuase a lot of the data in the registry is locked, becuase its in use I guess, and won't back up. But you can back up certain entries and that helps keep the state of your more important apps.
