My old HDD just died, so I need a new one. The old one was a 5400RPM 20 Gb western digital. I also have a 7200RPM 20Gb WD, and a 5400RPM 5gb WD. I have a RAID card, so IDE channels won't be a problem with my CD drives. What is the best HDD that will last me the next four years going 24/7. What is the best way to set up the drives with the OS, and file storage partitions. I plan on using all the drives.
Maxtor 80Gb D740X (7200rpm ATA133)
Seagate Barracuda IV 80GB (7200rpm ATA100)
IBM 120GXP 80Gb (7200rpm ATA100)
any of those will work great for a long time, if those are too expensive they all come in the 60Gb, and 40Gb flavors. Good Luck ;)
I'd run the options like this...
BIV - Quiet
Maxtor - Fast
IBM - Mediocre
IBM has no real downfall, the BIV's run kind of hot, which some people don't like. I have yet to hear of an instance of one failing, though. I know they take OCing quite well, from my own personal experience with mine. The Maxtor eats OCing, and asks for more, as far as I've heard.
I went with the BIV, I think the real decision in HDD's is "BIV or Maxtor? Slightly quieter, or slightly faster?"
Do NOT get the IBM. They have been having problems recently. Mine worked for about a year and then started making a high pitched noise that hurts my ears.
I have an 80gb BIV - it runs great. Right now, it's barely warm to the touch.
OUCH...5 RMA'd IBM's in one year was enough to bring me right back to Maxtor....running 4 of them in my main rig right now. If you're going to OC...do not get an IBM drive. ;)
IBM had problems with the 75 gxp series, the new 120 gxp series is fast and reliable.

Where would WD rank on a scale of HDDs? It it tolerant to OCing? How loud are they compared to others? Some of my WDs are extremely loud. I never bothered hooking up my HDD LED on my case because its so much easier to listen for the drives working.
Ugh, stay away from Western Digitals! You should look at the worst hard drive poll somewhere in this forum.
