I am probably going to go with the Gigabyte 8IRXP and a P4 1.6A but I am concerned that I may not be able to run it at 133 Mhz. Has anyone heard of this chip NOT hitting those speeds?
I don't want to spend money on it if I cannot overclock it up. As I cannot afford a P4 2.0A. If it doesn't work out that I am pretty much gauranteed, I'll just go GA-7VRXP and Athlon XP 1700+..
Please let me know, I have to allocate this $800 VERY wisely.
I don't know about the Gigabyte but you ought to try the Epox4SDA+ or the MSI 645 Ultra. With that you're pretty much guaranteed 133FSB if not 140+.
I know the motherboard can handle the FSB, I just want to make sure that any 1.6A is capable of 133 FSB. Are there any bad batches to be aware of? Or are they just perfect?Quote:

I don't think anything is guaranteed. But mobo and cooling would be the most important factors. Some ppl said they are getting over 2.0.
The first cardinal rule of o/c is that nothing is guaranteed.
So true, The 1.6a's are the leading overclocker's right now or so I believe. Im not much of an intel guy, but I though there were along with the 1.8a's?Quote:

All the Northwoods overclock extremely high. Infact one guy on SF, had a 2.2 NW, and got it to 3.8! :eek: Just shows u how far u can go. even if it is with water cooling.Quote:

Like I said, the first rule of o/c is that there is no guarantee because there are always other factors involved.
1. As the manufacturers processes become better, they usually get more high speed chips than they require, and these are frequently binned down to slower speeds to meet demand. However, not all chips in a particular bin group made speeds that far in excess of that for which it was binned.
2. Motherboards, like CPUs, may not o/c as well from board to board as there can be variations in the board making process, as well as the quality of the board chipset and other components.
3. The RAM modules in use may not tolerate out of spec speeds required for higher o/c, even if the rest of the system is capable.
4. PCI and AGP speeds start going out of spec, thus bringing any of the peripheral devices installed in your system into the equation of just how high you will get.
With a little research and careful selection you can try and minize these factors, but you will never eliminate them. That is why there is no absolutely no guarantees when o/c.
Please listen to Un4given! Too many people are taking stock in the overclockability of the Northwood cores, and if you're only buying a chip for an overclocked speed, you might be SEVERELY let down.

The motherboard and RAM can handle the speed, so is there such thing as a bad 1.6A? I really don't think so, and I sure hope not!
