wahoo!! KPM 5.1!!!!

well i totally wasted my sub(http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthre...hreadid=128484). if you read in there it tells you the whole story and such. but to add on to it, i went home today and tried the new sub in the z-560 cabinet. i was a little afraid cause it was a 4 ohm sub in an 8 ohm amp so i didnt want to crank it. well i had it turned up a decent amount and it was kinda distorting and i was like, huh, so i turned it up a little louder and then it was like 'shhhhhzzztttt!' there goes my amp. starts smoking, all lights on control pod go out and it smells bad. take it apart and my fuse was totally wasted and the amp was totally gone as well. bummer. my ex-girlfriend that i was hanging out with was there and she was all like bummer and stuff. so she offered to buy me a new system and i could pay her off later. so she bought me a KPM 5.1!!!! im totally stoaked! i havent even gotten to crank it yet but it still sounds totally nice! wahoooo!!

Nice, although ironically, the PM5.1 isnt as loud as the Z-560s, according to 3dsoundsurge.

I'd kill for a center channel setup tho. :-)

BTW, now we'll get a good idea of Klipsch quality control. Considering that you blew up 3 Logitech 560s and all. :-)

What I don't get though is how the hell did an ex-girl friend pay for $400 speakers??? Are you getting back with her, or is she a suggamama???

first off, even if the KPM 5.1's arent as loud as the z-560's, they are sure loud enough! i pushed them a little bit so far but not maxed out yet to see how loud they can go. im gonna break them in a little bit and then start pushing them. i hope these dont blow on me. im actually thinking that the all 3 subs i blew were prolly from me pushing them too far cause i wanted "more bass". well these have more bass as well as base that hits better and lower thanks to the dual 8 inch subs :D oh the glory! and my ex-girlfriend and I are still very close even though my current gf does not really appreciate it, lol. its cool though. she knows how much i love my computer and my music. so its all good. shes not really rich or anything but she found out about credit cards and such :( :eek:

I've been pushing my PM's for a few months now and they're still tickin'. However, I did have one strange occurrence.

After I'd attained what I felt to be a "good burn-in period" I decided to push them a little with what other mp3 than Chemical Bros' Under the Influence. Hehe. ;)

Anyways, a little less than half-way through the first bass drop, the whole system -- PC, PM's, monitor -- shut off. *click*

All I had plugged in was the PC + monitor on a power strip (with surge suppression) and the PM's in the same wall outlet, but not in the strip. I had the volume over 65 I think, but no more than 68 and the bass was set around 11 or 12. Nothing would turn back on, so I unplugged it all and waited for about 20 mins. Plugged it all back in and *sigh* everything came back up. Freaked me out, but everything still works okay.

Yeah, Squirrel is loaded with women, I can tell. He even brings them into LAN parties to show them off. :mad:

Actually, now that i think about it, the PM5.1 probably do get louder than the 560s in real life---i.e. you can turn them up louder than you would the 560s for fear of toasting the Logitechs. :-)

i might have a slight problem. the bass is not nearly as much as the z-560 sub. its really low for this sub and this sub has been distorting alot like at a volume of 58 with the sub at 9 or so. its kinda pissing me off. and when playing dvd's the sub barely kicks in at all. is it something to do with software or did i just get gyped on my speakers? i have my friend over rihgt now who has the 4.1 system as his sub sounds louder than mine!!!!! whats the dealy yo?

I think you've just been used to the boomy, overpowering Z-560 sub. Although it shouldnt be distorting at 50% of volume unless A. thats louder than actually 50% B. you have the bass cranked all the way on both the windows mixer and the control pod. I suppose its possible that they are a bad set, since although the 4.1s are more emphasizing on bass, the PM 5.1 sub should not be distorting before the 4.1s.

Apparently, the Z560 sub is louder, but the PM5.1 sub is tighter. Since the PM4.1 sub is even boomier than the Z560, thats probably what you are hearing.

Well first of all, let me ask you, how do you have the speakers connected, and what kind of sound card do you have?

I'm pretty sure you know that you should plug in the bass plug in the 3rd analog output on the sound card. That's if you wanted AC3-decoding to happen in the sound card itself. I don't know if the KPM5.1 come with a digital decoder, but if they do, then you'd probably use the s/pdif output.

Now, if you're using the s/pdif, the bass will be a lot calmer because the signal that it is getting will be crystal clear. That's better for classical music and rock, but not for rap, house, and dance music maybe.

Anyways, I still think that you pushed the Z-560's bass really too far. I mean even with RAP music, I never set the bass of both Windows and Conrol Pod for more than 50%. In fact, I find it overkill. I never needed to raise the bass higher than that for any kind of music or movie in fact.

What are the formal watt specs of the KPM5.1 by the way? Isn't the bass 250watts? I'm surprised that it doesn't perform as it should.

The sub is rated 200W RMS; the sats are 60W x 5 = 300W.

As I haven't heard the 4.1's, I really can't compare as to how the bass should sound. I know I can feel it from the other room...

And DVD playback is always going to be a little 'soft' unless you go higher on the volume; typically 15-20 clicks higher.

hrmpphh.....i dont think you guys understand. when im watching dvd's there is litterally very little or NO sub at all. like its so soft i can BARELY hear it. and i have the volume in windows at 75 percent and the volume on the speakers about 80 percent and the bass at like 12. thats just sad. and when playing some rap and stuff the bass is WAY quieter. i went to compucare(i didnt get a manual in my box) my girlfriend was listening to the sub at one of the demo computers and she said that even that 5.1 system sounded way better than mine. im kinda baffled as to what the problem may be. mabey i just need to reinstall my sound drivers or something.....arg

Just wondering....you dont have PowerDVD set to mix the LFE channels with the main speakers do you? And you set it to 5.1 channel? Same with your sound card?

If you dont have any of those options enabled, see if theres a way to hook up the PM 5.1s as a 4 channel setup and mix the LFE channel in with the other speakers like you did with the Z560s.
