I know this topic has been posted...i tried searching OS for the thread but it's too old and has been removed. I was wondering if there's anybody out there with that "line" for me to type into "run" to remove msn messenger. Thanks

I think there's a slightly easier way, but this works:Quote:

start | run | notepad c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf
delete all occurances of "hide" (actually, you only need the one from the line with msmsgs in it)
goto add/remove programs | windows components
you should be able to remove it
I removed it from a PC just by going to Add/Remove Programs.
I'm guessing he's running XP. In XP, it is installed automatically and doesn't appear in add/remove programs. It is necessary to edit the file specified above to add it to the windows components menu.
And as soon as you do that, a "Critical Update" will appear for MSN Messenger.
If you install that "Critical Update" it will reinstall MSN Messenger and hide it within Outlook so you can't uninstall it as easily the next time.
That's Microsoft for you...
I've heard about this, so it'd be a good idea to review all the critical updates before you install them.Quote:

On the other hand, I've installed all the critical updates available and I haven't had Messenger come back.
It reinstalls it, but doesn't start it up.
Very true. I just found it sitting on my computer. Oh well. As long as I never see the icon, I don't particularly care.Quote:

I don't know if they're included on all distros, since each one is made by a different company, but some of the more common are IRC, LICQ, GAIM, Everybuddy, and I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that come to mind first.Quote:

in run, paste the following
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Press ENTER
Restart Windows
This will remove it even if it has been reinstalled from critical updates.
ur the man brahma, thanks a lot...i remember somebody posting this before but forgot who...oh wellz, got what i wanted :D
Does anyone know how to remove MSN from startup without uninstalling it? I tried msconfig but that causes WinXP to hang at the startup logo screen (and I have to revert to "last known good config" and I have MSN back on my startup list).
I tried the sysoc.inf tip here, but apparently it only works for uninstalling. Anyone have any ideas?
I can't help you but I can tell you that I have messenger disabled with msconfig. I'm running XP Pro and have had no lockups or used LKG.Quote:

I'm running Pro too, but could you tell me what "LKG" stands for?
