Someone wants to buy my computer! How much should I ask?

I was talking to someone at the farm where I ride (horses), and she mentioned that her computer crashed the other day, and she wants to buy a new one. She uses Photoshop & Frontpage a lot, and wants an Athlon 1Ghz, 80Gb Seagate BIV HD, DVD & CD-RW. Well well...I was considering selling my system, which has:

Athlon 1Ghz (266fsb)
256Mb Crucial PC2100
Iwill KA266-R
Kyro II w/TV-out (or dual-head GF2MX w/tv-out)
Lite-On 12x DVD
Lite-On 24x10x40 CD-RW
Inwin Q500N, modded 120mm side intake, 300w PS
Soundblaster Live X-Gamer w/LiveDrive
She also might want my beloved NEC Fe950+BK monitor...she doesn't want to spend over $1k. I'm sure what I have isn't worth that much, so I need to find the right price...so I make a profit, but don't rip her off.

Any ideas? Keep in mind I'm not selling to a fellow cheapskate PC builder..and I want to replace my monitor (with something better, or equivalent), buy this from newegg (for my LAN system, which will become my main rig):

..and have a couple hundred bucks left. I don't think it'll be too hard - I'll ask $350 or so just for the monitor, so replacing it won't be a problem (or should I keep it, order a new one, and give her the new one at retail price?)..

I might be able to sell my AK31 and Duron 750..if the price is right, I might sell my 30Gb WD and get one of those 8mb cache HDs.

So...what do you think?

I'd say 500 without the monitor. 700-750 with. That's how much I would pay.. but you could ask more and agree on a bit less if she wants to negotiate. :)

It's a $350 monitor, so I couldn't do $500 + $200 = $700...but if you think it's worth $500, I might be able to pull my SB & LD, and use onboard sound...then ask $900 w/monitor...

I would say about $750 for everything. Have fun trying to sell it. ;)

With a $350 monitor!? That makes $400 for the system...:

RAM: $65
Case/PS: $90
DVD: $35
CD-RW: $65

Motherboard: $70?
Video card: $50

$440 there, without the 80Gb BIV, sound card, or livedrive...add $350 for the monitor, and that's $790 + HD and sound.

Processor wise i'd guess about the same or maybe hers by a bit, but overall your system is better.

Ask how much she's willing to pay and then sell it to her for that if it's satisfactory :)

That's probably what I'll end up doing.

I'm now thinking of building/selling systems once in a while - what's the best way to figure out what I should charge? Cost of parts + $50, or..?

$50 is good enough, but my guess is quite a few people go for $150-$200 more.

IF it costs like 975 to build instead of going to 1025 i'd round to a nice even 1050 or 1100 :)

There, you just answered your own question. Sell it for what you could replace it for, then add a few bucks for your trouble. Easy as that.

Apparently I did..but I wanted some other input as well.

make sure to include what it cost you to ship stuff, especially the monitor.

Fortunately, this would be a local sale..I'm not sure if I would even attempt to sell it online, due to the heavy full tower case (Inwin Q500N..it's heavy) and the 19" CRT..thanks for the reminder, though :)

You have to rememember that your stuff is used Cadet. Once you use it, the retail value drops a lot, especially on the moniter. Now, I'm sure your things are in good condition, and the person you are selling it doesn't really care, but I think that is why Gateway_rule suggested selling the whole thing for 700. :cool:

Based on this, Dell would sell your system for about $1300...or more. I think around a thousand is a fair price to ask. All of you saying "750, have fun trying to sell for more" you're forgetting that the person buying the computer isn't like us on the forums...the Geeks :p

Just ask how much she is willing to pay, then try to notch it up a little. From what I gather, this is pretty much a business deal, and should be handled as such.
