We've noticed that not all P4-1.8A's and P4-1.6A's come with the same fan. Some come with a small fan. Some come with a much larger fan. If you've never seen the difference, trust me, you'll be able to differentiate. The small fan is the same size as the old P3-1000 fans. The big fan is quite large and thick. What we have noticed is that the processors that come with the larger fans seem to overclock much higher than the ones with the smaller fans. To alleviate the possibility that the airflow obviously made the difference, we switched the fans on two 1.6A's just to make sure. Sure enough, regardless of which fan they used, they both hit relatively the same clock as before, the one that originally came with the larger fan obviously hitting a higher clock speed. (Meaning, the fan didn't actual make a physical difference). Now, one or two experiments doesn't make a proof as you can see.
So, our theory is: Pentium4's that come with the larger fans tend to overclock more.
Actually, my theory is that the 'larger fan' P4s are Malaysian, and the 'smaller fan' P4s are Costa Rican (or other). I just built a friend's dad a P4 1.8 Northwood as well (See thread called 'P4
