external?,internal?...
my typcial connection speed is 24kbps
i mainly play games like Quake2,and i'd like to improve performance there...my phones lines are excellent,but i live in the sticks,hence the mediocre speed...
i'm considering the diamond supra,or usr external/internal...
whitch one do you guys think will serve me best...
are external modems faster for games then the internal pci's?
Dial up modem? Definatly internal...
If your connection speed is 24kbps, it's not your modem. It's your phone lines.
I think the BEST 56K modem are the external U.S. Robotics ones, but they cost a lot for dial-up modems.

So external or internal? And you are right about those modems... they cost about $10 more than a Duron!
the belief that external modems are faster comes from a time when processors were slow and stealing cpu cycles for win/soft modems meant lower performance..
external modems were a sure bet that they had a hardware controller vs. software controlled modems..
since around the time of pII's this hasnt been an issue(except with linux OS which i believe is no longer a problem)
if you positively must have a hardware controlled modem(purely out of preference) then there are internal modems that perform as well as any external modems for less$$..
IMO, you should just tweak what you have, providing its a 56k V90 modem to start with..
there are loads of tweaking programs for modems.. tweakdun is one ive used with some success.. there are many others like it..
Make sure your modem is using the latest drivers. If that doesn't help, try disabling V.90. V.90 causes problems if you don't have a good connection, the older V.34 though slower.. is alot more stable.
The best Win Modems are Lucents. The best hardware modems are U.S Robotics.
The US Robotics V92 internal controller based modem is by far the best modem out there. Price is a tad steep-paid 80 bucks for mine at staples but it is well worth it.Quote:

call it a flame, but lucent technologies' winmodems suck. and i'd just like to say, that i usually don't think it really matters what kind of modem you have, as long as it isn't lucent, that is.
i have had some seriously phucked up modems, and all software based, with minimal hardware, but if your phone lines are good, you shouldn't have to worry about such things. i'm running the cheap-*** creative modem blaster v.90, cheapest that i could find at newegg.com and not a problem so far. i have -awesome- phone lines, and though it pains me to say it, a good ISP (pains me because i work for them).
i highly recommend, if you're in a house that's been around for some years, just get some good solid wire, and direct wire from the box outside to a modular jack in the house, then from there to your computer. best way to go, bypass all that **** wiring in your house. worked for me last time i was in a 50+ year old house.
either that, or you can be like my customers, and call up *****ing, and expect someone to flip the magic internet switch, or maybe wave the magic internet wand, and make everything better. we always appreciate that. (note dripping sarcasm...)

yep, my grandfather owns one, and it said you can get great speeds with them. (it's on the box, but I don't remember what the speed was, I think double)Quote:

one thing, don't ever expect more than a 6kbps download speed over dial-up. steady, that is. USR or not, there is a limit to dial-up speeds.Quote:

US Robotjunk modems really suck some serious ***, from personal experience at my dads company their failure rate seems to be around umm 99%...we HAD a USR at home but it screwed up on its own and we replaced it with a Hayes, which is MUCH more reliable albeit a tad more expensive
i dont know why you guys like US robotics so much.....how many of you actually have one? same goes with maxtor HDDs, i get sick when i see the phrase "get a Maxtor fluid bearing harddrive" being thrown around as advise, cause FYI all seagate cuda ATAIVs have "fluid bearings" too
point is, stop recommending something justt because everyone else does, if you actually own a product and would like to voice your adulation for a product then by all means do so, just dont tell other people to buy something just cause its something that is "hot" on the boards

uhh, you forgot the <flame> and </flame> tags dude. i love USR modems because of my personal experience with them. don't have **** to say about the software ones, but the USR modems that are completely hardware based have always treated me nice. not that i can afford one at the present time, but if i could, i probably would.Quote:

band-wagons piss me off too, but so do people who dog the **** out of good products. sorry to hear about your bad luck. hope you like your present modem better.
Well the worst winmodem you can buy is an HSP modem. Lucents are the best long as your using 5.97 driver or later. I work for an ISP and know from experince, Lucent modems with the latest driver has the highest connection speed (around 49k - 52k on clean phoneline) and is most stable. Modems using HCF chipset are 2nd best. But anything using PC-Tel / HSP chipset is junk and I recomment throwing it away. Most customers with these modems always have connection issues.. even on clean phonelines.
But in most cases that main factor of getting the best connection is mostly weighted on how good your phoneline is. And when in doubt, always buy a US Robotics. People will bring there computer to be checked out and if we can't get a Win modem to work in it... Drop in a US Robotics Hardware modem and it always works.
