how much are you willing to drop on a new card, and what are your system specs?
maybe 200-300$
1300 mhz p4
256 mb sd ram
win xp pro
what kind of video card do you have now?
you can get something cheap like an
ati radeon 8500le for $94
chaintech gf4 ti4200 w/128mb for $166
those should last you a while until you need a major upgrade
right now im running a geforce 2 gts
I got a 128mb 4200 which OC's to 315/600. The 4200 certainly is the best value right now. I mean yeah you could spend the money for the 4400 or 4600 but that's only buying you a bit more memory speed. My 315 is just about what you'd pull with the higher end cards anyway. Quite frankly the difference between 600Mhz memory and 700 even 750Mhz is not that great IMO to justify the extra $50-150. I'll admit the 4400 is not nearly as poor a purchase from a value standpoint though.
I got mine at newegg. Pricewatch has some 128 4200's for less than $160. Still I'd go with a more trusted vendor
so my comp is good for it?
can handle it well...
hey sapasion, i notice that you have an incredible 3dmark score for that kind of system. what are you using to overclock your ti4200? any reccomendations for me? i'm still running mine on stock. what could i run my core/memory at? any suggestions would be great. thx!Quote:

pinchy
It should run fine on your comp, but wont run much faster than a GF3ti200 or 8500LE since your rig wont be able to push either of these cards very hard.Quote:

A 1.4Ghz P4 on SDR is no faster than a 1Ghz DDR athlon.
I think an 8500LE is the better value for that system.
My vote goes to the the $94@newegg ATI made 8500LE 250/275,3.3ns ram,No Dual CRT.(as long as you dont need the dual CRT)
with the current system you have now, it'd be pointless to buy such a high end card. i would focus on your cpu/ram/mobo first. that'll be most beneficial. it is obvious that it is currently your bottleneck. then, i'd probably pick up a ti4200 or a radeon 8500.
A GeForce2 GTS to a GeForce4 or Radeon 8500 is a huge jump and a 1.4GHz Pentium 4 even with Single Data Rate SDRAM will still have enough juice for you to noticably feel a big increase in performance.
I would go for the video card upgrade :).
Yeah, it is really a huge performance jump, he is still is using a P4.Quote:

One question though..how can he be using SDRam with a P4? P4s only run on DDR or RD i thought...
And regardless, his current system is definetly the bottleneck...Upgrade either the Gfx card now or later, eitherway, both need a performance boost sooner or later.
The i845 chipset supports good 'ol SDR SDRAM. The i845E are the ones that support DDR SDRAM.
Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that. Goofy me!
My friend just got his new Radeon 8500 128 meg and i'm over at his house playing with it right now. It's pretty sweet. For $168 shipped from newegg it's a VERY nice card. It feels like my old Radeon, exept it's much faster and has moe features. I have it in my box right now, which is just a PIII 800 and i can tell it wants more CPU power. My friend's rig is a T-Bird 1.3 and it runs much faster. I wish i had more stuff to test on my system.. Neverwinter Nights runs better for me now, but it's still my CPU holding me back. On the other hand, I have the Jedi Outcast Demo, which ran pretty badly before, and now I can crank it all the way up and it still runs great.
The immage quality is also exelent and it runs really nice with 128x anistropic filtering. It can handle FSAA too; it uses super sampling, which is a real hog, but it looks nice. I highly reccomend this card. I'd say the immage quality sets it ahead of the Ti4200 for value and it's easily fast enough that I can't see spending any extra money on a Ti4400 or Ti4600. I got to see a Ti4600 running on a P4 2.53 ghz system a little while ago. It was very fast, but it looked really bad. the color was horrible and it had pretty bad sync problems. Though, i immagine V-sync was off for some reason.
Either way, I think the 8500 is the best option. If you still need more speed for what ever reason, than the extra money you didn't pay for a GF4 would be much better spent on the rest of your system, since that's where the bottleneck will be if it's too slow.
