I am building a computer for my violin teacher who is currently studying music in UNLV. I am planning on installing WinXP home ($90) or WinXP Pro (Around $140). I heard that student in college can get windows for a cheaper price.
So how much does it cost??? Where can he get it???

Usually, students get MS products WAY cheap. w2k cost 15 bucks, office 2k was 20...One thing people don't get MS credit for is the huge discounts they give students and academic organizations.
If the school doesnt sell it, you can buy XP Pro academic for a little under $100. Thats what I did. Its exactly the same just cheaper price. You can get it at some software stores, or online places that sell academic software, like journeyed.com

i go to kent and we have to show our student id's and we can get xppro for $10 i think the price varies from school to school
Can you register th operating sytem to someone else other than the student?
Its the same as buying it from a store. You give them money, they give you a sealed copy of Win XP pro. As its sealed, it can be registered to whomever :) Just take it home, install it, and do the whole register thing. AFAIK the keycodes are no different for Academic copies, then from regular 'future shop' bought copies.
Your teacher friend could ask to buy 2 copies, and get them both at academic prices. They almost never ask questions.
Being a student (or having friends who are) is very handy :)

err does your school have to have some kind of special deal with MS? Because I attended UBC (in BC, duh ;)) and I only see academic versions of MS software in the store, still way expensive :(Quote:

My college has MS software on the shelves too, but my WinXP Pro and Office XP Pro were behind the counter. I had to ask for them, paid $10 each, signed a Student EULA and I got the CD's. They came shrinkwrapped in plastic/cloth sleeves.

I told my violin teacher to check it out tomorrow when he goes to school. If it is cheap enough, he will get me a copy! The bad news now is that he is uncertain if he want to buy a computer or a lap top.

Ok, I just found out that Windows XP Pro Upgrade version is $99! That is from UNLV. My local college isn't worth to bother with...

I just got a copy of XP Pro for a $5 DEPOSIT. So essentially it didnt cost me jack.
College is good for more then homework.
