Well I suppose it's time for me to get an uninterruptible power supply.. unfortunately I don't know very much about them, so I don't know what to choose. I'll need the following to be protected by the unit:
My computer (550w PSU)
cable modem
router
switch
my server, with a 300w psu (coming soon, will replace the router)
what kind of UPS should I get to keep all of those 'powered' up? Do I sound like an idiot?
Visit www.apcc.com, they make very good UPSs. Be sure the unit you get has protection for your LAN and MODEM lines too. Don't buy too much power, just enough to keep you up for a couple minutes to shutdown normally.
Why wouldn't he want to buy more power?
I'm really starting to dislike APC. I've had far too many of them fail on me. Just got a tripplite model, so we'll see how that goes.
As far as the size, visit apc or tripplite they both have sizing programs.
The reason I recommend the minimum power needed is the costs skyrocket going from just 2 - 3 mins to 5 - 10 mins. When I loose power its usually during a thunderstorm and I really don't like to be powered up running my PC when lightening is around. I shutdown as soon as I can and ground my equipment (drove my own mother-earth ground, 16 feet of copper rod also used to ground my ham radio gear).Quote:

I'm sorry to hear of the APC failures you've suffered. Please let us know how it goes with the TrippLite ups. Regards . . .
Well I dont see why you wouldnt need to run your system for more then 5 minutes, alot of APC units have the ability to interface with your rig and release a shutdown command before the battery dies. Whether you buy APC or Tripplet (when the hell did they start making UPS') Belkin or Cyberpower. Please for the love of all things computer related by an in line UPS and not a parallel or "switching" UPS. I have a switching one, and I wish I hadnt been so freakin stingy. They have a tendency to damage components.
I think your only hurddle that you might find is that what you have listed you are going to need a UPS that can support a max of a 1000w which is a tall order for a commercial UPS. YOu may want to look into segmenting that.
Why would you want power backup for the switch or the cable modem? If your router resets when loosing power then i would understand that but seems to me like more then likely your internet will be down if you have a power loss. If you just want to protect from brown outs then i still don't see why you need it to cover those devices. I have an APC and i like it. You can always use more then one too you know. I would look at like officemax and staples they will have deals on some of the smaller ones that will keep your system up for like 5 min sometimes if you look in their adds on sundays. I got one for $10 a while back i think it was from staples. But just keep looking for good deals in the paper. plus ebay sells them for really cheap but most of them need a new battery.
Typically you can get any UPS (they are all the same practically). Just watch power requirements. You may want at least 625 VA for your double copm set up.
I would strongly suggest to look for the UPS with AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator). These units cost more (in $180-$250 range), but they will provide you with a conditioned power.
I am using Belkin Gold Series, but I am sure there are more brands available. I like APC, but their units are quite overpriced. My experience with APC is mixed. I do not like Cyberpower due to the quite bad experience (I had 4 units failed on me).
