Please don't close this cuz I'm not trying to find any... I'm just really annoyed of having to switch CDs all the time and I'm wondering does using a no-cd patch cause performance slow-downs or anything?
I wasn't sure what was involved in creating one so i figured I'd ask.
Often times its the opposite...SafeRom and other things constantly poll the CD, so using NO CD patches can increase performance--situation dependant, of course.
nocd patches are sweet, I use them all the time and it also helps keep the cds in good condition. if you need any game copy world is your best place. anyways your legally allowed to use them if you have the original cd ;)
i've used a few in my day and never found a problem with them... just back up the original exe or whatever files they replace because when you update your game, it might detect a different size or something, and not let you update...
Same here, I don't think I've ever had a problem with a good no-cd patch. It usually loads faster as well, since it doesn't have to spin up all the CD drives to verify the CD. Like Kero-chan said, just remember to back up the original EXE, so if there is a big performance hit you can just go back to the original.
This is one of the main reasons I like using them, especially for games you play often. Why scratch and wear out a cd if you don't have to?Quote:

Awesome, you guys convinced me! I just hate swapping CDs all the time, especially if you're into two games at once (UT2k3, NWN right now).
yeah, i use them for convienence more than anything, its just a pain sometimes to have the HD full from having to select Full Install (i'm talking about games with >2 cds like BG2 and NWN)
Yeah, when I play MDK2, it keeps on slowing down everytime it has to load a new audio clip from the CD. Ever since I patched it, I haven't had a problem at all. Unfortunately, I lost my copy of the patch, and I forgot where my cousin got it. Ho hum.
Same with GTA3.
But they released a patch so ti doesn't use the CD during gameplay, but just check it during boot-up.
I think that is reasonable.

errr... you know I'm not even sure I've tried it since I patched it. I just got the game like a week or two ago, so I'm still getting used to it.
I wish they'd make a good one for BF1942 because it keeps checking my cd everytime I want to go to a different server.
