Ok, so lets imagine a hypothetical situation in which the AIM service and servers (oscar.aol.com or whatever theyre called) has been blocked. not on one computer, but an entire network. lets say hypothetically that AIM Express, trillan, the like all do not bypass this filter of service. How would one be able to use AIM at all? is it possible if ports are opened. If ports are opened, how would this be accomplished? Thank you for answering the questions my "imagination" creates. :D
Lemme guess, school blocked AIM? Well my good friend, if AIM Express is blocked too, and we all know its a Java based appelt, they my guess is that you are way out of luck. To make AIM connect, you have to manually remove the block on the server name, and you need the right port, which is 5190. The server name is login.oscar.aol.com, so good luck my friend, may the um, AIMForce be with you :p
ok, i need step by step for this. and this is going to be done on a mac. please give step by step for a pc if u dont knwo mac, ill try to figure it out. thanks a lot. yeah my school district is run by a bunch of narcs. not fun. searching the word "poison" brings up this big "X STOP" page, which actually jsut stopped my research during school on treatment for ALCOHOL POISONING. stupid *****es need to un**** themselves. hahahahah one more year. :D :cool:Quote:

on more thing, the port isnt blocked locally, its blocked by the internet service provider, which is the school district. ill bet that made it all but impossible. now, just for the sake of hypothetical situaitons, please give me a step by step, as it might jsut be my high school and therefore SLIGHTLY more remote. if worse comes to worse, im busitng out the phoen line and using netzero. hahahaa. I would place money that your school has locked every port but a handle full. Usually the ones associated with HTTP, FTP, DNS, SMTP and maybe TFTP, and anything else that might be required by any applications that they run. And all that done at the schools Router.
Your only chance is to "tunnel" through a known open port.

Simplicity itself. Going with one of the ports usually left open for mail, FTP, etc, just do this:
Go into your preferences (the wrench icon at the bottom of the AIM window)
Click on SIgn On/Off
On the right, click on the 'Connection' button
In the window that pops up, type '23' in the Port space
If they're only blocking ports and not the server name itself, you should be fine.
If they're also blocking the name of the server, you could also try replacing 'login.oscar.aol.com' with '64.12.161.185' or '64.12.161.153'.

One thing to keep in mind is that if wherever you are has the ports blocked, then there is probably a rule about circumventing the block. It's your decision: is AIM worth possible disciplinary action?

hahaha well thats a duh. I was actually thinking about doing it as a senior project, or so my excuse will be if i do get caught. how would they catch me? and what would they do, give me saturday school and not let me use the school computers? theyre really sitty anyway. lol :p
Most sites with many users, especially in public places like schools and libraries, log everything. Then reports are produced outlining abnormal activity such as a usert connection on a port other than 80.Quote:

A senior project on how to break the rules, misuse school resources and property will certainly be well received. NOT!
What can they do? How about failing you in each class where you broke the rules by circumventing the system? How about expelling you and not allowing you to graduate? There is alot they can do to you.
I have a tendency to agree with Ua here. Schools are not really linear or up front with your discplinary actions.
You really dont want to end up like 5 class mates of mine when I was a Senior in HS. They were expeled 2 weeks before graduation, they had to go to a JC in the summer to finish their GED as opposed to getting a High School Diploma.
Believe me we all (I mean 98% of our entire Senior class) protested the hell out of the topic, along with the parents of those students (which was really hard cause 2 of the 5 classmates were the children of alumni). But it was pretty futile, the school disclosed their discplinary records and it was like opening pandoras box.
If the administration has spent the time to block that port, then they will spend the time to really ring you for wasting their time in the first place. Its vicious.
Besides, if the ISP blocked the port, yer out of luck, there would be no way of crackin it up... hehe sucks to be you in your district :DQuote:

lol all good points. a few years back, like in 1998, a senior did his senior project on hacking the DISTRICTS main servers (the ones that stored final semester grades) etc in front of our principal and district superintendent and he passed, but then again, he outlined what he was going to do first and got approval, and just did it as more of a security test than anything. oh well, no IM for me. :( its just that i'm a TA in a really dumb teachers class who keeps me in class when he doesnt need me (as opposed to other teachers who let students go home and sleep and what not). i dont think that th phoneline idea would work well either because even tho i could dial out and all, i think my school has maybe 5 phone lines going outside of the school, and if one were to be blocked fo rlike an hour.... a **** it all. sdcs can eat ****! all i wanted to do was use AIM!
Now I can see why there are shooting in High Schools all around the country. All because they cannot get on AIM.
Dude get over it. Go out and get a life. Believe me there is much more to life then AIM.
Its not recommended to go around rules and set procedures. They installed it for a reason. No one should use AIM or visit sites that are not school related. Just wait till you get home and use the internet and AIM to your hearts content.
Man, when I was in school they didnt have AIM, ICQ and all that jazz stuff. I graduated around the time the Pentium 120 was released. Man i feel old!
