whats the fastest hard drive

looking at a hard drive to use on a asus p4b533,somthing about 40 -60gb but want the fastest load times possible.i dont need more than 60 gb really as i format quite a bit and never keep that much old stuff on hd anyway. games like ut2k3 and such are taking a little while to load and my drive sounds like it may be dying soon anyway-somtimes you have to give it a little tap to get it going so i figured why not upgrade.my drive is already a 7200 rpm drive so i dont think i will get much quicker but it is also a cheap one probably with little or no cache so there should be room for improvment

Western Digital makes a nice "Special Edition" drive with 8MB of cache. That's probably the best drive going. I use 2 Maxtor 40GB drives in RAID0 and that works quite nicely.

The new maxtor diamondmax plus 9 series of drives are out, and theyre dirt cheap too (atleast around here)

If cost is no object, I'd go with an Adaptec SCSI Ultra 320 setup with a Seagate U320 Cheetah 15k drive. :cool:

I'm using a similar setup but it is last year's Ultra 160 instead of U320. :(

I had a 2 15k Cheetah drive cause my local store gave me the wrong drives. It was only 9 gigs and I wanted to buy a 2 x 18 gig scsi (slower brand) so i told them they gave me the wrong drive (unfortunately i couldnt plug it into my adaptec scsi card).

I just wanted to say we have talked about it atleast 10 times here at sharkys.

Scrolling thru older posts will save u alota hassle.

Ya i know what you mean but some ppl have different situations like here where he wants the fastest loading time. And besides if every one scrolled we would have less new threads to read and react to. You have only been here for a month thats why you only saw 10. LOL:)

Yea, you think the "which hard drive should I get" questions are bad...wait till you get into the "which memory (or) power-supply should I get" questions. I'd say there is at least one of those on the General Hardware main page at all times.

Saying that the search function is an under-utilized feature is an understatement of gigantic proportions. :D

ibm 180GXP, worth going for?

is it worth going for the 180GXP? i am asking because, the reviews on this drive seem pretty good not to mention it is possibly the ONLY hdd manufacturer to offer 3 years warrenty on all of it's drives (still). any opinons would be good, thanks.

Isn't the IBM hard drive division going broke? There was a big lawsuit and I think they are going to liquidate their assets and call it quits for hard drives. In that case they could offer a lifetime warranty if they know they're not going to be around in 3 or 4 years to make good on it :)

Yeah, but the WDSE drives all have 3 year warranties on them too, I believe...I'd say that makes them even better deals.

IBM no longer makes disk drives. the sold their entire disk operation to Fujitsu earlier this year.

kinda figured that out in my first two days here.

and no i havent been here only for month its been a yr almost but i never participated in forums i was too busy with full time studies and job :)
