Hi all, I had a question about how to use AOL IM file sharing with a Linksys router. I tried setting a specific port in AOL IM for file sharing (HTTP port 80), and then forwarding this port to a specific computer on the network at home and this didn't work. I just want to get AOL file transfer to work while at home. I have the Linksys BEFSR41 router. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! :)
I had AOL IM file sharing working very briefly, I changed some router settings and it no longer works, but when it did I specified the port 5190. I'm not sure if AOL IM uses TCP or UDP, but I'm taking a guess at TCP.
Anyway I thought the port for AOL IM was 5190 (I looked that up on one of Un4given's posts).

I have the same router and for a long time, I had no ports set to be open or forwarding or anything, and it let me direct connect and send files and crap. But now, all of a sudden I can't, and nothing's changed as far as I can see. I can't understand why. I even set the forward specific AIM ports to this computer and crap and it still doesn't work.
It has confused me as well. I had it working GREAT with a guy that would never connect with me but I had changed some settings for another computer on the network and it stopped working. Great.Quote:

The only way it seems to work is if I put my computer into the De-Militarized Zone, but that way I would have no firewall :(.
If I do it the port forwarding way it doesn't always work, very baffling. I'm positive I'm doing it right so maybe the port numbers I'm opening aren't the right ones for AOL AIM file transfer would be my guess.
I can get file transfers to work as long as the receiving or sending party is not behind NAT. I use BEFSR81.
I have a Linksys BEFSR11, one of the originals. Since the day I got it, IM transfers have been hit or mis. Some days it works some days its doesnt, very odd.
Its really interesting, I've tried disabling the XP firewall etc. The only way it seems to work if I connect the computer directly to the cable modem. This however isn't an option since mine isn't the only computer that needs to be connected to the internet and I generally like the hardware firewall of the router. I've got the latest firmware and no luck. I do remember it working way back when.

Oh well, its not the end of the world, but AOL IM is a great way to transfer decent sized files between two users. I have an freind who I occasionally work with on videos and pictures for example and its a pain to have to burn it on a CD and drive over to swap. The irony is that when I'm at home, I'm behind the Linksys 4 port router (while hes not) and at college he's behind the exact same router (while I'm not) :p.

NAT - Network address translation. NAT is used whenever one IP address is divided between more than 1 computer.
Most soho routers use NAT.
One way that I find that always works if you put yourself into the De-Militarized Zone. Although it is not very safe security-wise, it's ok if you just want to transfer a file and take yourself off. Not very convinent I know, but at least it works. Port forwarding doesn't seem to work as well, I wonder if it's broken?Quote:

Sorry I'm not apt at this -- by de-militarized zone, do you mean exempt my computer (that IP range) under the security tab?Quote:
