I want to buy cheap new laptop.
I have puted my eye on compaq N1015 ->
it has AMD1500+,256ddr,14.1 inch screen , ATI radeon......
I"m a programmer i need my laptop to be stable
(i cant effort any crashes ,"dead screens" overheatings....)
COMPAQ are 20% cheaper than others. Is it worth it ?
If you depend on your laptop for a living, you should get a corporate quality laptop such as the Compaq Evo Series. Corporate machines are made with better quality components, have a better warranty and are much more stable than consumer level machines.
I purchased an Evo N610c a last November for ~$1900. It is fully configured with all the bells and whistles (except a $15 floppy) so a more limited featured model can be purchased for far less money. They are light weight - starting about 4.5 pounds - which is good if you have to carry the unit around all day.
If you'll be using it for work, I'll second ua549 and recommend you steer clear of "consumer grade" laptops like the Compaq Presario models and the HP Pavilion line. The business-grade models like the Compaq Evo ua549 suggested not only have better quality, but usually more competent support as well.
My personal preferences are with the mid to high end IBM ThinkPads or Dell if you're looking for more bang for the buck. The Compaq business models are also very good, as are the better offerings from Toshiba.
I've had a Compaq Presario 2800 for about 8 months (P4 1.4gig/ATI7500 32meg/384DDRram/also with 30 gig hd and combo CDburner/DVDreader drive and it has been one of the best computers I've ever had, it has windows XP home ed. and has only locked up once or twice in all the time I've had it and I think it was my fault when it did.
I highly recommend the product, but beware of compaq/HP lousy bumbling customer assistance and support. I have to tell you to beware of Dell, they sent me a broken laptop that arrived at my door and didn't work, also did you hear about that Inspiron that exloded on some poor girls lap in Africa?

Another reason to purchasea corporate quality machine - corporate quality tech support is done by very professional software/hardware folks that adhere to a very different set of standards. They are a completely different group than consumer tech support.Quote:

I've made one support call on my Compaq Evo N610c. There was a software issue during shutdown. A few hours after my call (early the next morning) a spare hard drive was delivered to help diagnose the problem. They didn't want diagnostic activities to mess up my hard drive. I plugged in their drive, loaded it from the recovery CD, then loaded each patch/update in a controlled fashion. It turned out to be an ATI driver problem. I returned the drive using the prepaid FedEx labels HP/Compaq provided.
Customer service does not get much better than that.
I prefer the lower end Dell models such as my inspiron 4100 because they are cheap and very reliable in my experience. All nice and light. =)
