XP Disk Cleanup problem
Hello all-
First of all, I have my 80gig HD in 3 partitions, with C being a 7 gig system partition (3.5 gigs used).
The disk cleanup tool under properties works fine for 2 of the partitions, but not for my system partition. When I click on it, it stalls on 'scanning: compress old files'. I know that it says wait a few minutes, but I left if for 20 min and same results. Also, I do not have any of the 'compress' options chosen, so I wouldn't think any of the files on that partition should be compressed.
I have recently used the chkdisk function and norton speed disk, btw
Any ideas?

I also ran defrag on the drive, still no success running disk cleanup. This is really stumping me. It's been like this for about a month.
Any help would be greatly appreciated-

Does a scandisk come up with any errors ? It'd be worth going through a thorough scan, since if you have a bad block or cluster on there, it could hang disk cleanup.
I'd have a go at deleting temp files manually - clear stuff from C:\windows\temp, C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\Temp and Temporary Internet Files in the same folder. Also note that windows hides folders in the temp internet files folder - if you go in with a command prompt and do a "dir /a" you'll see a bunch of folders, each containing a bunch of files (also hidden) - I delete all of these, and haven't had problems.

thanks for the reply moog-
I did do a thorough scandisk (chkdisk actually) and no errors found. I also did do a manual deletion of temp files of the 'secret' temp files in the ie5content folder in local settings.
Then I switched my swap file to a different partition, and lowered the amount of space given to system restore points. After doing all of this, the amount of space on my system partition was well within a respectable range. Still, for some reason, the disk cleanup prog gets hung right away. It puzzles me, but I don't know what else to do. Thanks for your help
