Between AMD & Intel

I'm now deciding which way to go. So far I have my chieftech case, 550watt true power antec, lite-on dvd, plextor 48x, audigy 2, and 200gb maxtor ata133 8mb cache. I can't go any further with purchasing till I decide on which chip to get. I currently have two athlon xp 1800 machines one is in my sig(10x166 and ram is at 166) the other has same amount of ram, kr7a mobo, and a geforce 2(not overclocked). What i'm wondering is which path is going to give me the most noticeable performance increase? Should I go the route of the 3.06 P4 or should I wait to see how the Bartons perform?

Wait a few months for Barton, then wait a few more months to see what everyone else is saying.

Pick up a 1700+ XP for $47 at newegg and OC to 2ghz. :D (this is what I'm gonna try and do hehe once it gets here)

I've already got two xp1800 machines.

I'd go for an ASUS P4PE motherboard and an Intel 2.4B chip.

Buy an EPoX 8RDA+ mobo with 2 sticks of the fastest 512MB DDR (400 or faster) ram, put them in parallel, and get Barton XP3000+ chip. If the Barton isn't available and you've got an itchy trigger finger, get a cheap Athlon XP1700+ rev. 'B' Thoroughbred chip and wait until the Barton you want is avail.

LOL hahah that is so true. Seriously though, I would say follow Anubis's advice and go with the Barton when it arrives. Also, I think the price of the Barton will not be $650 like the 3.06, but it might. This might be a factor for you or it might not, but I would think the 2 chips will preform evenly, and I would go with whichever is cheapest. :cool:

I know that... you missed the point my friend... The 1700 B's are well renowned their OC-ability, often hitting 2ghz. (as was stated in my previous post)

Personally i would go with exactly what anubius said or if you want to overclock get the 2100+ and a slk 800 instead then you should be able to hit 3000+ speeds fairly easy if you get a good stepping and if not 2800+ speeds wouldnt be too hard. As far as barton goes youll save alot waiting for it to go down in price plus the 512k doesnt seem to help much. I would wait for the barton with the heatspreaders and the 400mhz fsb to come out and tehn from there decide if its worth it.

Or you could go the p4 route and try to get 3ghz out of a 2.4ghz p4. Or even wait awhile till the HT is reased on the lower end chips. Right nwo the p4 looks like a better upgrade path with 800mhz fsb and prescott coming while AMD will be moving over to athlon 64 soon.

Of course though there are rumors of k7 going as far as 3.3ghz which would be awsome. So really it comes down to price.

Oh and AMD soldier i dont think you have read his specs very well he has a 1800+ tbred now which will probably overclock higher than that 1700+ so the improvement would be slight if any.

I have started to take up the idea that many have constantly stuck to, which pretty much says waiting is going to be useless because technology will always bring about something better.

The best way I see to do it, is decide on a near exact date you want your system completely by, then when that day comes, buy whatever best fits into your needs.

Only wait if you really don't need a new system, and think the upcoming product is going to be EXTREMELY kick-*** and I don't think the barton's going to be that product, and really conisidering it's just a AXP with a doubled l2 cache, we know it can't be unbelievable.

1ctabor, I would suggest deciding exactly how much you are willing to spend on the rest of your system, and then evaluate how much you can put aside for each part. Tell us what this allotment is, and then we'd be able to tell you which route is the best to go.

Some routes will point to AMD, others to Intel, and it just completely depends on your needs, and financial situation. If you want the best performance and have the money a 2.8~3.06Ghz p4 processor is the best. There is no doubt at this POINT RIGHT NOW, Intel has the performance crown. If you have median money and want decent performance, its going to be a tossup between AMD and intel because from 2.4-2.8Ghz (2400+ to 2800+) the two have similar prices and similar power.

If you want a lower end system with some decent power AMD is probably going to be better in the 2200+ and lower range.

In the sub $150 CPU price range AMD still dominates...
It appears in the $150-$400 price range AMD and INtel are neck and next, while in absolute top of the chart, Intel has taken a dominant lead.

Money isn't an issue and i'm not a fan for one anymore than the other. Mainly what i was wondering is if these bartons are going to compete with the hyperthread P4's. And this new rdram chipset coming out whats the deal there? Money is not an issue so let er fly.

well, i've heard many good things about Hyperthreading. never been able to use it myself just yet though. here is an excellent review of sorts, with a part about hyperthreading towards the end. the whole post is good reading though
