laptop not booting

Lo peeps,
I have just been given a laptop to look at, i know nothing about them, desktop PCs im fine with but this is somthing new for me.
Any way the problem seems to be that the laptop will not boot up, the power on light comes on, but then absolutley nothing. Now before i go taking this thing apart (its a SONY FX105 btw), has any1 had any experience with this kind of problem, as i really havent a clue what to about it.
