Im trying to decide on what monitor to get. Im looking for a 19in, black preferably for around 250-300 bucks. Im still apprehensive to buy a flat-panel monitor cause ive heard flat panels arent good for gaming and that i should get a regular curved-panel monitor. Any suggestions?
IMO flat screens look better. No distortion, less glare, and they certainly look cooler.
Not sure who you heard that from, because IMHO flat panel monitors are way better than curved ones. I'm on a flat panel one now, a bad flat panel one at that, and when I use the family computer (which has a curved monitor) I can't stand it. It's hard to read text because it seems curved and stretced. I would definently go with a flat panel CRT monitor.
BTW, I am also looking for a 19-21" CRT monitor in the same price range as you, and here is one that I am seriously considering:

Well, I think you have some termanology misconceptions...
I think you are referring to "Flat-screen" as a LCD monitor, which is a totally different technology than typical CRT monitors (big and heavy with glass screens).
CRT monitors are also available with "flat" screens - In other words, the surface of the viewable area is indeed, flat, like an LCD monitor. However, it's by no means as thin as an LCD.
Now, it is true that most consumer LCD monitors are not the best for gaming, due to the poor response time of the LCD elements. This slow response time can cause blurring and ghosting on fast-moving images, typically found in games.
More expensive LCD monitors have faster response times, which reduces the appearance of ghosting and blurring, but they are still inferior to CRTs in this respect.
I still believe that CRTs offer the best image quality (good ones that is).
To answer your question, I dont think you'll find an LCD monitor that you like in the price range that you quoted, but I DO think that you can find a very nice CRT - possibly one with a flat screen.
Other members here will probably suggest models that may work for you.

LCD's definitly offer the best image quality when it comes to non fast moving images. Nothing can compare to an LCD in terms of sharpness and the colors tend to look a bit better. However, the blur is definitly a problem on cheaper LCD's. It's there on faster LCD's but isn't much of a problem. I play lots of games on mine. For price though a CRT is a better deal.

LCD displays are very pretty, they're sharp, high contrast, and the colours are saturated, but not true. Most lcd monitors only have 8bit colour depth per channel, compared to a CRT's possible 12. Even extremely high end LCD's only typically have 10bit colour depth. LCD's are great for office applications, and good for DVD watching, but for serious graphics editing, they just don't have the range of colour to provide accurate onscreen results.Quote:

Yeah, im sorry, but LCDs have inferior image quality, in almost every catagory. I dont know where you got the information you stated, but umm, well, it's not really rightQuote:

That would be true if you're running at a resolution other than the LCD's native resolution, but at its optimum resolution, the text quality and sharpness easily beats out a CRT. Sometimes there may be a problem causing the text to be unclear, but that is usually a problem with the pixel clock & phase settings, which can be adjusted. I also have a very good quality 17" CRT, it is a Viewsonic A75f, with a flat screen. The text clarity simply cannot be compared to the LCD I have, which was one of the cheaper ones at $350. I play GTA3 on my 17" LCD, and there is no noticeable blurring, although if you play first person shooters the blurring might become a problem (I don't play FPS).
It is true that some LCD's can't compare to some CRT's in terms of color reproduction though. Some panels have a tint, and also the viewing angle can alter the colors displayed.
In combination with LDC's relatively low gamut, they also have problems keeping an even grayscale, and gamma is normally way off.
LCD's just dont have the color reproduction capabilities of a good CRT. Their "black" is one of their more obvious shortfalls.
Sure, they're clear and sharp, but so is a good CRT ;).
Im wating for thin CRT. Thinner than a typical LCD panel, less power consumption, and still a CRT. Mmmmmmmm...

If you talking about a good CRT the color will definately be better. The LCD I use has much better color than my old 19" KDS POS. It depends on how programs use black. If it black because of absense of color it looks a little grey. If you paint or draw black on the screen it is just as good as the CRT under ideal conditions. The old CRT had a terrible time displaying darker colors when sunlight was in the room. I could barely make out dark scenes during the day. Not a problem on either of the LCDS I have owned. Flat Screen CRTs are way more comfortable for your eyes than curved screen variants !
I have a Sony F520 as my primary monitor, and if I mess with the beam focusing ( yep, its a professional screen :D ) I can even use it all day without contacts and my eyes won't hurt -- try that with a traditional CRT and Id be in agony after 1 or 2 hours.
If U want a TFT though, then the Hitachi CML174SXWB has a 16ms response time making it great for LAN Parties @ 1280x1024 - and U only need to generate about 60fps !!!!!
I use my F520 @ 1600x1200 @ 90Hz when gaming, but that means I need 90fps to look best ( I always use VSync ) .... for 2D I use this beast at upto 2048x1536 @ 85Hz ........ If U can afford it I suggest U get it, but its a bit expensive - like 6 x the budget specified above !!!!

Where I got my information..well if you bothered to read my sig you'd notice I have flat panels :)
The sharpness is unbeatable. It will be a long long time before they make an LCD the same size or thinner than current LCD's. It's just the nature of the physics involved.
I usually recommend crt's though to friends for gaming. Most things are geared towards them which makes things a bit easier.
If you use the DVI out on the video card with an lcd monitor you do not have to adjust phasing, etc.
