Not sure of the earning power of individual titles, but this is a huge market all together. My son isn't quite two and he's already got people buying software for him. My neice is four and has a stack of CDs (guess about 50 or so). A colleague has 3 kids and their CDs probably stack to 6 feet tall. Considering most of these run $5 to $20 a pop depending on the branding, age, etc. that's quite an investment.
I've found my son's pretty happy so far with playhousedisney.com and noggin.com (which are free :D).
yeah, there's definitely a market for it. one important concept to keep in mind is EDUTAINMENT. After all, it will be the parents that buy the games. If you could get child psychologists and education professionals to endorse your games, then you're set! Most parents realize that computers are here to stay and that their kids should learn to use them at a younger age to keep up with everything else.
I'm learning programming again. and it's more fun to program games than a dull business app.
and let's face it I'm no John CarSmacked. and don't know have the skills to do 3D rendering and all that fancy stuff.
plus as a single developer I have a limit on time and resources so I figure Children games is the way to go.
besides the games can be crap and they won't critize it that bad and I don't have to compete with the likes of Quake or Unreal :P
the games can be much graphically intense, but a good deal of energy should be directed towards content if you want to be successful; content as described in my edutainment reply.
