Centrino vs. P4-M

Well I had decided to get a Dell Inspiron 8200 with a 1.8GHz P4M and a 64MB Geforce 4 440 Go, but when I went to order it today the 8200 is no longer available, as they changed over their configurations.

The new notebook I am thinking about is the Inspiron 600M with a 1.3GHz Pentium M (centrino) and a 64Mb radeon 7500 card. I was wondering how this would compare to the 8200 I had picked out earlier this week?

Are the processors similar in performance? are the video cards?

edit: In one place on dell's page the card in the 600m is a 64MB radeon 9000 not a 7500, so not sure which is actually in it, but I hope its the 9000, then the only question is between the processors.

well...here's the thing...a 1.6 Pentium-M is the same as a 2.4 P4-M...so i'm guessing that the 1.3 Pentium-M would be better than the 1.8 P4-M

with the centrino cpu.. your battery will last longer

hmmm...I think it's only called the "Centrino Solution" if you have the P-M processor, the new mobo (855?), and the Intel Pro Wireless.

Anyway, I think it's the MR9000 64MB you're getting there. I don't think ATi makes 64MB MR7500's, but two description pages for the same laptop say different things for some reason. If you look closer at the tech specs I think you'll find it. I'm familiar with this because I want to get the 600m myself :D :D

Either the 600m or the D600...

As for processor performance I estimate the P-M 1.3 Ghz will be around the equivalent of a 1.7-1.8Ghz P4-M as well.

First dell 8200 kick A$$, I dont really like the new 8500 design but if you like it that might be a good soultion. Auctally the 600m is the sam dsign as 8500 just not widescreen. I think that the 8500 will be temporary and a new design will come out. After the all the time intel spent on the centrino procesors i think that the p4 is going to be obsolete. the 600m is going to probaly upgradealbe4 tlik ethe 8000 series.

All right enough of my rambleing... BTW I am assuming you might want this for hardware intensive programs.

Id go with the 600m, Its cheaper, and more upgradable.

melee, what kinda of stuff can the 600m upgrade later on?

what do you mean they are the same? are you saying that they are the same proc, just with a slower clock speed? or that you will get the same performance, aka 1.6 P-M = 2.4 P4-M in performance?

the 1.6 M has the same performance as a 2.4 P4 and from user reports I've determined that the 1.3 has the same performance as a 1.8 P4.

Also the 600m's video card is a radeon 9000 w/ 32MB or 64MB of dedicated ram.

I just ordered mine yesterday and am eagerly awaiting its delivery :D

the only reports i have seen are on the intel website.....so i take them with a grain of salt....do you know anywhere else there is some info and some solid test results?

I saw some benchmarks on some sort of newsletter (Forgot the name but it seemed reputable) and the 1.6GHz Pentium-M outperformed the 2.4GHz P4-M by a few percentage points. I don't think it was ever slower. :)

CPU and video card not sodered (sp?) in so you can swap them out.
