for the most part i've noticed that most people on other computer forums are literally retard as to what they know about this, I'm sure as hell that the refresh rate of a monitor and FPS in a game have NOTHING to do with each other. run a game at 60hz refresh and then at the highest (85hz) and see if you notice a difference in FPS (and i mean big difference). but i say it's not even worth arguing with idiots, they'll never believe what is said unless it's comming out of their mouths.
Sometimes you wonder who these people are in society. Luckily here at Sharky there aren't that many people like that. I sometimes wonder how a person like that exists in life. The sad part about that is it doesn't look like he is joking. :(

And yes. If you play a game at 200 FPS on an 85 Hz monitor you'll get tearing. You're only actually seeing 85 frames per second, but since the buffer gets updated before the monitor finishes refreshing you end up getting a not-so-delightful mix of frames. This graphical defect is ugly and the option to turn off v-synch is only there for benchmarking. If you play the game so it's v-synched (the right way to play ) the backbuffer won't flip until the screen has finished updating - the game is effectively locked at 85 FPS.
The flickering isn't related to desktop framerate. The monitor frequency is the number of times the monitor is scanned per second (which is, in itself, intrinsically related to the actual visible framerate). If you view an image on an 85 Hz monitor you *are* viewing it at 85 FPS.
