waste of money

I've been reading all these post for a while and started saving my money to get a 9700pro (now for 9800) back in December. I was about to order when I thought, *** am I doing. If you read my specs. I have P4 2.53,512 ram, and a G4 4400. I mostly play Battlefield and just got my comp in semptember. I origannally was going to have the 4400 as a temp card since i didnt have much money at the time. But i've been getting 60 fps in my fav game w/all the settings maxed 1600x1200x32. Thats great for me the AA/AF doesn't really bother me. I could buy 8 games with the money for that card. What a waste of money $400 to clear up some lines I can barely see. I'm going to save my $400 and wait until theres a game that I only get 20fps on or something like that. Maybe that will be doom 3, and if it is I could get the top of the line then which will blast away the 9800.

I'm waiting for a 256mb card...

Just my thoughts. Now excuse me whilist I drool over some 98000 BF screenshots.

Seems like a smart choice to me. If you can get 60 fps at a high res, why spend $400 for AA/AF? :)

I'm kinda in the same boat as you, except I bought the 4600 hoping I could hold onto it for a while. And as good as the 9700/9800's are, it just wouldn't be worth it for me.

If anything I'll be getting a faster proc before a video card.

Good advise there.

If you are already getting a great frame rate with the games you currently play.. then why upgrade??

I agree with you if AA and AF isn't a big deal to you. However it is a HUGE deal to me. I can't stand looking at jaggies and blurriness. I never used to really notice when I played games but now I'll never go back. But if it doesn't matter to you, then I think you made a good decision.

I think saving money is good, by the time I need to buy a new video card, maybe I will have enough for a ATI9900 or a NV40. Whichever one is the best.

I run my games in 2048x1536, even ut2003 and it looks and runs great. what I need is a faster cpu so ill get 60fps at those res! my ti4200 is plenty, I dont care for fsaa either!

two words!! ********!!! OMG stop lying to make your self look good. And keep the GF4. Wait till next gen engines come out, then make your decsion then.

Good thread, melee. Your thought process was clear and IMO you're making the right choice. Particularly in your situation, where your current setup already plays BF1942 at 16x12 wonderfully, obviously, no real need to get a 128mb version of the 9800. This thread can also help people who don't already have a 4400 on top of a nice setup like yours. The 256mb 9800pro or the 9800non pro are the routes to take, IMO. I, for one,have a 9700np and will still be getting a 256mb 9800pro.

People usually buy the Pro version because it's the fastest clocked card of it's version(n o/c). In this case, with ATI moving to 256mb, it really makes no sense to buy a 128mb 9800pro.

Errr...you wrote it as one word :D

Buy the time your 4400 can not play games well you will be able to pick up a 9700pro for under $200. I have not run into a game my 64mb 8500le cant play well at 1024x768x32.

the time when i upgrade is the time when a flood of great games are coming out...did it back in december fot ut2003 & unreal2 BF1942 postal2... next will be STALKER DOOM3 halo(maybe)

I know what you mean about the waste of money... but i mean.. I like having a fast machine... and playing games super smooth.

I remember when MOHAA first came out, I ran it on my Tbird 1.4ghz, and My Geforce 3 TI200. It ran fine. However, I played that game on a 3gig P4, and Radeon 9700PRO, and wow.... I had NEVER EVER seen that game run so damn fast. That basically bought me. I told my self, I need to get myself one of these cards! :D.

The machine I plan on using this card in, only has a 17" monitor, so Im going to have to play at 1024x768 :(. However, a 9700PRO will still be fine at that resolution, and 4xFSAA and 4xAF or something... which is why I chose this card.

I recently finished the game "MAFIA", and it ran fine on my TI4600.. but not PERFECTLY smooth... I got like a constant 30-40 FPS, and occasional dips into the 20's. Right now Im playing freelancer... and it runs flawless in my TI4600.... cant wait till I drop the 9700PRO in there.... FSAA galore!

I remember playing Freelancer on my friends machine (2.4 P4, and FX5800ULTRA). Just for fun, i upped the FSAA to 16x on the card just to the system drag... but amazingly enough.. it played PERFECTLY smooth! Ran just as good as if it WASNT on... I was like :eek:

Cant wait till I get this card!
