if i try to ping hotmail, SF, yahoo, google, (known sites) i get a request timed out, but if i open a browser IE, netscape, opera i can access the sites. Isn't it the other way where you can ping sites but can't open them
i'm just curious

You can block outgoing ping requests through a router :)
Also those sites might block ping requests.
i highly dought it's the router.. the person who set it up only knew that it shares the internet :rollseyes:Quote:

beside, it'a a cheap router, no brand
Out of that list I cannot ping: SF & Hotmail
I can ping: Yahoo & Google
Did you try ping www.yahoo.com or www.google.com???
They are probably just blocking the return packet.. Most sites do.
security reasons?Quote:

The block is at the far end. Sites now days block ICMP messages because of the potential abuse - ping of death, etc.Quote:
