Favorite Winamp 2.x Version...
Those of you who have been using Winamp for a while and have paid attention to version changes, do you have a favorite?
Please don't turn this into a 'Winamp sucks, use _____" thread. I'm really interested in the thoughts of longtime Winamp users.
I used Sonique for a little while when I first found out about the mp3 format, then discovered Winamp in I guess 1998 or 99... and it's been one of the most important applications on my computer ever since. It's usually the third thing I install after a fresh format, after Windows and WinRAR.
I got curious about everybody's favorite versions for a couple of reasons... one, I've read a lot of posts on here saying "Oh, anything after Winamp 2.xx I'd never touch", but almost nobody ever seems to explain why.
Plus, since I usually just get a new Winamp version when I reformat, I haven't actually used every single version. They're just no reason when I'm always satisfied with the version I've got... until now. 2.91 was the first version of Winamp (other then 3.x) that I didn't like.
For one... maybe I checked off too many installation options, I dunno, but I didn't see a discwriter plugin. I had to download a third-party mp3 decoder plugin, and it sucked.
Also it had no support for MODs, again maybe because I checked something off.
It would randomly take up to 97% CPU usage when playing back shoutcast stations (That's 97% on a 2400+, mind you). NEVER had a problem like that before with Winamp. Made the music sound like crap.
Really slow to build playlists when queueing up large numbers of files. I noticed this with previous versions, but figured my computer must just be too slow. I remembered it being faster before though...
So all of these problems made me decide to roll back the version, but I didn't know what I should choose. I read a post on here by someone saying that he liked 2.64 because it built playlists faster, and sure enough, I downloaded it and it's exactly like I remembered... except on the 2400+ it's practically instant. :)
So those of you who have kept track, what version do you like and why?
