Most manufacturers are el cheapo and put crappy sleeve roller bearing fans on their graphics cards which explains the high failure rate. I think your friend is referring to the GeForce FX cards which use the core temperature to determine the fan speed. I put AS3 on my old Ti 4200 core; it ran cooler at 304 MHz with AS3/Tt cooler than it did at stock (250 MHz, standard cooler).
