My question is that for the same amount of money I can get an xp2000 retail. This is going to be for an office so I was thinking that the added quietness with the hsf I chose for the xp1700 would be better, but what do you guys think?

For use at work, it would be an Intel chip an Intel board. For a production system, reliability must be the highest concern.

Lol. People are still using the lame old "AMD is unreliable" excuse? Ha Ha Ha. And an Intel Celeron 1.1 for the same price as an AMD 1700+ and someone recommends the Celeron? ROFLMAO. Anyway I hope Average Joe is smart enough to see how bad the Intel recommendation is.

Anyway, that system looks pretty good and I would go for the retail XP2000+ if you could find it for the same price as OEM 1700 + HSF. I am using an AMD retail HSF on one of my comps and it is not as loud as people will have you believe. I use the retail HSF in my office comp (which sits on my desk) and I can barely notice the noise from my comp over the noise made by a couple of Dell machines on adjacent desks. :D

So buy the retail 2000+ CPU/HSF. It'll be a little louder than some of the 'silent' HSFs out there, but not loud and annoying like some of those ridiculous and extreme noise-making HSFs. All in all, retail HSF is just fine in the office. If the comp is in your bedroom and you cant tolerate any noise while sleeping, thats the time when retail HSF becomes unbearable.

Well I have an AMD Athlon and I have never had a problem with it, but from what that other guy said I got the impression they were sometimes quite unreliable, thats all. Lol, sorry for the awful adv ice :)

Calling the AMD platform inherently unreliable anymore is just propogating what is now a myth.

Haha... thanks guys. I'm not going to drop down to a celeron for the same amount of money as an amd xp. I've used 3 amd chips for over 2 years without a problem, so I'm not worried about reliability (I'd be more worried about a HD failure than a chip failure).

Thanks bluefusion for your take on it. I figured I'd get the xp2000 in the end because I can always add the silent hsf, but if I bought the xp1700 I'd have to either overclock or buy a new chip if I wanted something slightly faster.

Oh yeah, AGERSTONE, you don't need to agree with people even if they have 2000+ posts. Remember that the people with high posts started right where you are. Just say what you really think :)
