I'm not sure where i should have posted a RAM question, and sry if this is the wrong forum for it...When I build my new comp I planned on getting Consair XMS 1x512MB 3200....now my friend said im better off getting 2x256 than 1x512, something about that one stick wont run at its rated speed, but if u match up the sticks than it will, is this true??

If you are getting a MB that has DCDDR then two sticks will give you better performance, but other then using 2 256mb sticks of ram I would go with 2 512mb sticks of ram if you can afford it. If your MB does not have DCDDR then one 512mb stick will do. Also if you can`t afford two sticks of 512, I would get one 512 stick now and one later.
OK, along those lines - what if I got a 512 stick of CAS2 mem to go along w/my CAS2.5 (both CorsairXMS 3200)???? I run at CAS2, anyway...Quote:

I have read that ususally if you put two sticks of ram together you will be running at the lowest speed. I don`t know myself if you will be able to do it or not, but I`m sure someone on the forum`s will have a answer for you.

Then your friend is right, you will get better performance using two sticks of ram in dcddr mode.
thxs for clearing this up for me, i will prob go with 2x256, cause i dont think i will have the extra cash to get the 2x512, but i will have to see...
One stick of 512 now and another later on seems wise. If you ever got into a situation where you needed a lot more ram in the future, you would have the dilema of already having two expensive smaller chips. From what I hear you're not going to notice much more performance with the duel chip thing if any.
You can pretty much bet though that the need for ram will always increase and ram sticks will get bigger.
As far as the cas latency goes I think when you mix chips you are stuck with the timings of the slower chip.

Well, I can deal wit tha as long as I can USE both. Again. I'm running at CAS2 now, anyway.....
