Your favorite game soundtracks

I'm sure this discussion's been done before. But, I don't think I've seen it since I've been a member here, so thought it might generate some interesting conversation. At least, I hope so. :D

So, what are some of your favorite game soundtracks, computer, console, or coin-op?

I would say that my all time favorite is Robert Holmes' soundtrack for the computer game Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Synthesized game soundtracks appeal to me much more than pre-recorded digital ones, and this soundtrack takes the cake for me. It's got plenty of variety and loads of atmosphere.

It definitely helps to have decent MIDI capabilities for this.

Monkey Island 2 also rates highly for me. I thought that iMUSE was a great idea.

Consoles have more of a history of really catchy game tunes - hell, you could fill CD upon CD with tunes from the NES alone. For full-length soundtracks though, I would say that Chrono Trigger takes first place for me, with Final Fantasy VII not far behind.

Super Mario Bros.

Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

The Punch Out soundtrack sticks in my head. I also liked the music in Contra...:)

Off the top of my head, not in any order, and I know I'll forget some awesome tracks-

1. Final Fantasy IV
2. Chrono Trigger
3. Xenogears
4. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
5. Megaman X4
6. Actraiser

Final Fantasy IV for totally blowing me away for console MIDI with the SNES's wavetable synthesis emulation.

Chrono Trigger and Xenogears, because they were the highlights of Yasunori Mitsuda's console work.

Medal of Honor's soundtrack was certainly a great step in soundtracks for games.

BTW- Has anyone seen the previews for the movie Seabiscuit? I swear to GOD that's the theme from Medal of Honor rearranged slightly. Couldn't see the composer's name on the preview though.

The Original Final Fantasy on the NES had amazing battle and victory music. Switching to more modern games, Vice City's soundtrack is excellent.

Wipeout XL is the best I've ever heard. Listen to We Have Explosive and you'll agree :D

Several of the mixes of DDR have some good music, especially the 5th/6th.

The River City Ransom soundtrack

The Streets of Rage soundtracks (1 and 2)

The soundtracks of Mega Man 2 and 3

The list goes on and on. :) You can find lots of these NES midis at vgmusic too. Remixes at OCRemix. Good stuff! :)

Erm, Vice City's is pretty good, Super Mario Bros too.

6th hands down. Too bad that arcade mix didn't have nearly as many tracks from other mixes as 7th and Ex.
