If you get the right 9500np 128mb with the red pcb and the ram in a L shape around the core you have a chance to softmod it into a 9700np, IMHO the chances of you getting one to do it is about 1 in a 100.
You cant find a L shaped red pcb 9500 anywhere these days.. :(
Newegg has some sapphire 9500np 128mb with the red pcb and the L shaped ram, but I have not heard of anyone getting one that successfully moded into a 9700np and they ended up with just a 9500np.
I was just wondering if it was possible to get the np to a pro since i heard the 9500np is just half of the pros chip disabled.
If you get the new design with the black PCB and apply the softmod, it will turn into a 9500 pro, since the black one is just a 9500 pro w/ 4 disabled pipelines.
There is no way to softmod a red one into a 9500 pro because the 9500 pro has a 128-bit memory bus while the red 9500 np has a 256-bit one, similar to the 9700.
So a red one can only turn into a 9700 pro while a black one can only turn into a 9500 pro.
Hmmm... that's not what I heard.Quote:

I heard that both the 4 extra pipelines and the 256bit bus can be enabled on red PCBs. Then, to make it a 9700pro the only what's left is to do some overclock.
Black PCBs are newer and are no longer based on 9700's PCB, so they can't be turned into anything. They were made after ATI discovered that people was softmodding the red PCBs to 9700's.
This what I read somewhere, could be wrong as well... yesterday I ordered a 9500np (don't know which PCB it'll have yet). When I get it I'll try the mod and post the results, along with the PCB type.
Cheers.
Someone told me the 9500s from Newegg were the old L-shaped design. I ordered one and sure enough, it was. I didn't really intend to do any modding but now I'm kinda tempted. The odds are against it working and I really don't even need the extra punch, but I love messing with this stuff..hehehe
